A 68-year-old woman is recovering in stable condition after a terrifying highway crash left her trapped in a burning car early Sunday morning in Chester, New York.

The dramatic rescue unfolded around 4 a.m. near Knapps View Park on Kings Highway, where police and emergency crews rushed to the scene following reports of a car flipped over and engulfed in flames.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle fully ablaze — and the driver still trapped inside.

Officer Nicholas Contino was the first to reach the wreckage. Without hesitation, he handed his fire extinguisher to a passing motorist and sprang into action, according to a statement from the Chester Police Department.

Contino managed to locate the woman inside and smashed the sunroof to pull her free. With help from two bystanders and a paramedic from Empress EMS, they dragged the woman away from the burning wreck just in time.
