A woman was tragically killed when a roadside pole fell onto her car after being struck by a truck that overturned following a minor collision on a busy highway in Melbourne, Australia.

The crash occurred on the Hume Highway near Austrak Drive in Somerton, in Melbourne’s north. According to authorities, a truck and a sedan collided, causing the truck to roll onto its side. The overturned truck then hit a roadside light pole, which toppled onto a Honda traveling in the opposite direction.

Emergency responders found a woman inside the crushed Honda with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics worked to revive her, but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman has not yet been formally identified.

The male truck driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the sedan involved in the initial collision were reportedly uninjured.

The crash prompted the closure of all inbound lanes and the right outbound lane of the Hume Highway, with officials urging motorists to avoid the area.

Officers from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are on the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and the woman’s death. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV or dashcam footage, or any information, to contact Crime Stoppers.

The investigation remains ongoing.
