Two young children in South Africa had a heart-stopping brush with death when a bounce house they were playing in was swept 40 feet into the air by a freak gust of wind. The wild scene, captured on video, unfolded during a school fundraiser in Krugersdorp, and it’s every parent’s nightmare.

In the footage, the inflatable suddenly lifts off the ground and soars skyward with kids still inside. Moments later, onlookers watched in horror as one child was thrown from the air and another followed shortly after, tumbling helplessly to the ground.

Witnesses say several parents jumped into action and tried to break the children’s fall with their own bodies. Their quick thinking likely prevented even worse injuries, but both kids were seriously hurt — one suffered a fractured skull, the other a broken arm.

Thankfully, the children have since been released from the hospital and are now undergoing trauma counseling to help them process the terrifying experience.

As for the bounce house, it eventually crashed back down about 50 feet from where it launched. It’s still unclear if any other children were inside during the airborne chaos or how many managed to hold on.

An investigation is reportedly underway to determine how the inflatable was secured — or if it was secured at all.
