The glittering buzz of the Cannes Film Festival was shattered Saturday morning when a massive palm tree came crashing down on a film producer, leaving him seriously injured in a horrifying, freak accident on the iconic Boulevard de la Croisette.
The victim, reportedly a Japanese producer in his 30s, was walking along the palm-lined promenade near the Gray d’Albion beach—just a stone’s throw from the red carpet—when a sudden violent gust of wind uprooted the aging tree and sent it toppling directly onto him.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene of chaos and screams as the tree came down without warning in the middle of a packed pedestrian area bustling with tourists, cinephiles, and festival-goers.
“I was sitting there enjoying my coffee when out of nowhere this powerful gust hit,” said Marthy Fink, a festival attendee who witnessed the shocking moment. “I heard a chilling scream and then watched in horror as the tree slammed down on the man. It looked rotten—like it shouldn’t have even been standing.”
Emergency services rushed to the scene and quickly cordoned off the area as they treated the man and transported him to the hospital with serious injuries. His current condition remains unknown, and while local media identified him as a visiting producer, officials have yet to confirm his identity.
The incident happened just hours before Hollywood heavyweights Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone posed for cameras at the Palais des Festivals just down the promenade. The stars were promoting Ari Aster’s much-hyped new film Eddington, blissfully unaware that a potential tragedy had just unfolded steps away.
More than 15,000 film industry professionals are currently packed into the city, joined by thousands of fans and celebrity spotters. But Saturday’s freak accident exposed the darker side of the festival’s sun-drenched glamour—a sobering reminder that even in the world of red carpets and flashing lights, disaster can strike in an instant.
As of late afternoon, a portion of the Croisette remained taped off, and questions are already being raised about the maintenance of the iconic palm trees lining the promenade. Locals say the wind was fierce, but many are now wondering whether that tree was already on the verge of collapse.
“It could have been anyone,” Fink added. “That tree didn’t just fall—it attacked.”
