The controversy erupted after New York Magazine published a scathing exposé citing current and former aides who claim the 6’8” Democrat has grown “manic,” “paranoid,” and “erratic” since his debilitating stroke in 2022. One source even warned the senator may not “be with us for much longer” if he doesn’t get serious help.
But on Tuesday, Fetterman appeared on CNN to deny everything—and lash out at the story’s unnamed sources.
“It’s a one-source hit piece, and it involved maybe two or three anonymous disgruntled staffers saying just absolute false things,” Fetterman said. “It’s incredibly invasive.”
The senator insisted he’s staying on his medication and following his doctors’ advice. Yet behind the scenes, concern appears to be mounting.
Private Letter Raises Red Flags
The most damning revelation in the report? A 2024 letter written by Fetterman’s former chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, to a top doctor at Walter Reed. In it, Jentleson described his then-boss as spiraling out of control:
“I think John is on a bad trajectory, and I’m really worried about him,” he wrote. “We do not know if he is taking his meds and his behavior frequently suggests he is not.”
Jentleson cited multiple alarming incidents, including Fetterman allegedly driving recklessly while using FaceTime. That behavior came to a head in June 2023, when Fetterman was involved in a high-speed car crash in Maryland. Police said the senator was at fault, and one officer told a staffer on the phone, “It’s a miracle no one died.”
‘Not Stepping Down. Period.’
Fetterman dismissed his former aide’s concerns, suggesting Jentleson was motivated by personal animus:
“If you’re really concerned about someone, you could say, hey, let’s sit down. Can we talk? It’s not … like going to the media,” Fetterman said.
In response, Jentleson told CNN, “I stand by everything I said. I hope he gets the help he needs.”
Despite the mounting scrutiny, Fetterman says he’s not going anywhere.
“Of course I intend to serve my full term,” he said. “Who knows what’s going to happen in ’28?”
A Troubled Political Trajectory
Fetterman’s rocky path to the Senate has long drawn concern from voters. After suffering a major stroke just before the 2022 Democratic primary, the former lieutenant governor spent weeks off the campaign trail. He returned with visible speech difficulties and underwent treatment for clinical depression in early 2023 at Walter Reed—an unprecedented move for a sitting U.S. senator.
Critics say the recent revelations confirm what many feared: that Fetterman was never fit to serve and was propped up by Democratic operatives desperate to hold onto a Pennsylvania seat. His GOP critics are now calling for full transparency and even medical evaluations.
“If this were a Republican senator hiding a mental health crisis and putting others at risk, the media would be in full meltdown mode,” said one Capitol Hill aide. “But because it’s Fetterman, they’re trying to shield him.”
The American public—and Fetterman’s own constituents—deserve answers.
Should sitting senators with serious medical challenges be allowed to quietly deteriorate behind closed doors? Or is it time for accountability?
