Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is under fire from fellow Democrats after siding with Republicans to pass a continuing resolution that prevented a government shutdown. The move, seen as a concession to former President Donald Trump and GOP leaders, has sparked outrage among the Democratic Party’s progressive wing and key establishment figures.
AOC Leads Progressive Outcry
“This is a tremendous mistake,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) declared on CNN. “It is almost unthinkable why Senate Democrats would vote to hand the few pieces of leverage that we have away for free when we’ve been sent here to protect Social Security, protect Medicaid, and protect Medicare.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s frustration is shared by many on the left, who see Schumer’s decision as a capitulation rather than a strategic move. The bill, which passed 54-46, saw only three Democrats in favor: Schumer, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was the sole Republican to vote against it.
Pelosi and Other Democrats Join the Rebuke
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed her disappointment, warning that Democrats were being presented with a “false choice” rather than standing firm against Trump and the Republican majority.
Anne Caprara, chief of staff to Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, didn’t hold back, posting on social media: “The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left, and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. Misread this at your own peril.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) dodged questions about his confidence in Schumer, making it clear that tensions within the party were running high. “We do not want to shut down the government. But we are not afraid of a government funding showdown,” he stated at a Friday press conference.
Media Allies Express Frustration
CNN commentator Van Jones voiced what many frustrated liberals are feeling: “We want some alpha energy. And that’s not what we’re seeing. This party is tired of watching Donald Trump and Elon Musk run over this party, run over this country, run over the Constitution.”
MSNBC’s Symone Sanders took it a step further, saying she was “pissed” that Schumer “folded like a paper napkin” and even suggested she might switch to being an independent voter.
Schumer’s Political Gamble
While Schumer has yet to publicly respond to the criticism, sources within his circle argue that the decision was based on pragmatism rather than ideology. A Senate staffer close to Schumer, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed the minority leader believed rejecting the bill would have led to a prolonged shutdown that would ultimately harm Democrats more than Republicans.
“Chuck made a hard call, but a necessary one,” the staffer said. “He knows how bad a shutdown looks to everyday Americans, and he wasn’t willing to hand Republicans an easy talking point.”
Still, for many Democrats, Schumer’s reasoning is little comfort. The divisions exposed by this vote reveal deep fissures within the party, raising questions about leadership, strategy, and how to handle Trump’s continued influence in Washington.
As the fallout continues, one thing is clear: Schumer has gambled big, and only time will tell if his decision will pay off or if it marks the beginning of a broader party revolt.
Schumer’s office has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
