There was an awkward moment at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner when the event’s internal camera feed accidentally cut to the wrong journalist during a key speech.

According to attendees, including Ruthless podcast co-host ComfortablySmug and Puck News co-founder Julia Ioffe, the internal feed mistakenly showed NBC News White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor instead of Black Press USA’s Washington Bureau Chief April Ryan.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) hasn’t responded to requests for comment about the mistake.

The mix-up happened around 10:10 p.m. Eastern time during WHCA President Eugene Daniels’ speech. As Daniels praised Ryan while presenting the Dunnigan-Payne Prize for Lifetime Achievement to former WHCA President Bob Ellison, cameras focused on Alcindor by mistake. Daniels appeared to notice, shaking his head and mouthing, “That’s not her.”

Even Alcindor caught the blunder, mouthing, “I’m not April Ryan” as the camera stayed on her.

Julia Ioffe later confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that the mix-up was visible only on the internal feed at the event. Thankfully, the broadcast feeds on CSPAN and MSNBC showed the correct footage, cutting to Ryan at her table instead.

ComfortablySmug, who first flagged the error on social media, has not responded to further comment requests.

Sometimes even at Washington’s biggest night, the cameras just don’t get the memo.
