A fierce debate erupted Monday on The View after comedian Amber Ruffin was dropped from headlining this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner — all thanks to an explosive anti-Trump rant that critics say went too far.

Ruffin, a former Late Night with Seth Meyers writer and current left-wing activist, called Republicans “a bunch of murderers” on a podcast last week. The fallout was swift. By Saturday, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) axed her and canceled the traditional comedy roast altogether.

“The right call,” said Alyssa Farah Griffin, former Trump White House staffer turned co-host.
“I watched her comments. And listen, the media’s credibility is in shambles with much of the country,” Griffin told the panel. “You can’t build trust when your emcee says people in the Trump administration aren’t human. That’s beyond offensive — it’s dehumanizing.”

Griffin was referring to Ruffin’s appearance on The Daily Beast’s podcast The New Abnormal, where Ruffin unloaded on Republicans.
“They’re kind of a bunch of murderers,” Ruffin told hosts Samantha Bee and Joanna Coles. “Making them seem human… they shouldn’t get to feel that way, ‘cause they’re not.”

WHCA President Eugene Daniels, a Politico reporter and frequent MSNBC guest, responded with a quiet announcement over the weekend:
“We are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” he wrote to members.
According to Daniels, the board’s vote was unanimous. The stated goal? “To ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work.”

But not everyone on The View bought that explanation.

Sunny Hostin called it caving to pressure.
“It’s the classic schoolyard bully scenario,” Hostin said. “You let him take your lunch once, he’ll take it again. And that’s what this feels like — giving in to the right-wing mob.”

She went on to compare Daniels’ decision to Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer’s recent retreat on immigration rhetoric.
“He capitulated, just like Schumer did,” Hostin added.

Ana Navarro backed Hostin, arguing that Ruffin’s identity made her removal especially problematic.
“She’s a Black, queer woman,” Navarro noted. “Her presence would’ve meant something. Those are the voices being erased right now.”

But Griffin hit back with facts.
“Eugene Daniels, the man running this thing — he’s a Black, gay man himself. He’ll be emceeing now. There is representation.”

Griffin also slammed Ruffin’s choice of words.
“Maybe say, ‘You’ve done things I disagree with,’ or ‘Your policies led to harm.’ But calling people ‘murderers’ and ‘subhuman’? That’s not comedy. That’s poison.”

Whoopi Goldberg tried to thread the needle.
“She wasn’t doing stand-up,” Goldberg argued. “She was being interviewed. It’s a different context.”

Griffin nodded but didn’t budge on the principle.
“She’s funny. I get it. But this crossed a line.”

Background: Why This Matters

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has long been a spotlight moment for journalists and politicians alike — part roast, part celebration of press freedom. In 2018, comedian Michelle Wolf sparked national controversy by roasting then-Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The WHCA has since tried to walk a tighter line.

This year’s dinner, set for late April, was expected to feature Ruffin as its first openly queer woman of color emcee. That milestone is now scrapped, with Daniels himself stepping in.

For many conservatives, the episode highlights a deeper issue: the left’s increasingly hostile tone toward anyone who disagrees.

As one senior GOP strategist told us off the record:
“Amber Ruffin just said out loud what a lot of elite liberals really think — that Trump voters aren’t just wrong, they’re evil. The media might pretend to walk it back, but the damage is done.”

What’s Next?

The WHCA says it wants to return focus to scholarships, awards, and “unity.” But with the 2024 election still casting a long shadow, unity may be wishful thinking — especially when the media itself keeps picking sides.
