The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has abruptly pulled comedian Amber Ruffin from headlining its annual dinner after she launched a vulgar, politically charged attack on the Trump administration and its supporters—calling them “murderers” and claiming they don’t “deserve to feel like human beings.”

The meltdown, which aired on a podcast hosted by The Daily Beast, ignited a firestorm among conservatives. Ruffin’s unapologetic remarks went viral, sparking outrage among Trump allies and raising fresh concerns about the media’s hostility toward Republican voters.

Ruffin’s Words: “They’re Not Human Beings”

Ruffin, a former Peacock late-night host, stunned listeners when she openly dismissed WHCA’s request to keep her comedy set politically balanced.

“I’m not doing that,” she told podcast hosts Samantha Bee and Joanna Coles. “That makes them [the Trump administration] feel like human beings, but they shouldn’t get to feel that way—because they’re not.”

The fallout was swift.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich didn’t mince words in response: “This year’s WHCA dinner will be hosted by a 2nd rate comedian who is previewing the event by calling this administration ‘murderers.’ What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this?”

WHCA Cancels Comedy—Cites “Division”

By Saturday afternoon, WHCA President Eugene Daniels sent a letter to members announcing the comedy portion of the April 26 dinner had been scrapped altogether.

“At this consequential moment for journalism,” Daniels wrote, “I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship.”

But behind the scenes, pressure had clearly mounted.

According to insiders, many WHCA members were furious with Daniels for selecting Ruffin in the first place. “Many WHCA members are privately pointing the finger at Eugene,” Budowich said. “Yet they are all turning a blind eye to it publicly.”

Ruffin Once Praised by the Same WHCA President Who Cut Her

Just weeks ago, Daniels had hailed Ruffin as the perfect choice for the prestigious event. “Amber was immediately at the top of my list,” he said in February. “She walks the line between blistering commentary and humor.”

Now, that praise has turned into damage control.

Ruffin and her team have not commented publicly since the cancelation.

A Tradition Undone by Politics

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which began in 1921, traditionally brings together the press, the president, and top officials for a night of roast-style comedy and celebration of journalism. But in recent years, the event has become a political flashpoint.

President Trump refused to attend during his first term, calling it “boring and negative.” He’s not expected to attend this year, either.

In fact, sources say the administration is preparing to host a competing event that supports working journalists without the anti-conservative hostility.

“Why would anyone sit through an event that calls half the country monsters?” said a source close to the White House. “There’s a reason people are tuning out the corporate media and turning to real voices.”

Trump White House vs. WHCA: Ongoing Battle

Since Trump returned to office, relations with the WHCA have grown tense. In February, the White House stripped the group of its power to assign reporters to cover the president—taking that authority back into its own hands.

WHCA slammed the decision, claiming it “tears at the independence of a free press.” But the administration pushed back, saying the press pool had become politicized and lacked fairness.

The same month, Trump barred the Associated Press from covering press events after it refused to adopt the name “Gulf of America” for the Gulf of Mexico. WHCA sided with the AP, but critics argue the association has long chosen sides.

“There’s no neutrality anymore,” said one conservative media analyst. “The WHCA has become a partisan operation dressed up as a press organization.”

Crisis of Confidence in WHCA Leadership

Daniels now faces growing skepticism from within his own organization. According to media insiders, a closed-door virtual meeting earlier this month turned heated. Many members reportedly demanded a stronger response to the Trump administration’s changes—not just press releases.

“There were a lot of pointed questions,” one attendee said. “You could tell people were frustrated.”

With trust inside the WHCA unraveling, and the public increasingly skeptical of mainstream media, this year’s dinner may be remembered not for who was on stage—but for who wasn’t.

As one Trump aide put it bluntly: “Americans are sick of being insulted by the same elites who claim to ‘defend democracy.’ If the WHCA wants respect, they should start acting like professionals—not activists with press passes.”
