In a stunning display of human resilience and faith, a Peruvian fisherman has been rescued after spending a staggering 95 days lost at sea. Máximo Napa Castro, 61, was found alive by Ecuadorian fishermen nearly three months after setting sail on December 7 from Marcona, a small fishing town along Peru’s rugged southern coastline.
Napa Castro’s incredible saga began when a violent storm knocked out his navigational equipment, causing him to drift helplessly into open waters of the Pacific Ocean. For more than three months, his family prayed and refused to abandon hope, organizing daily search missions despite dwindling odds.
The miraculous rescue unfolded on March 11, when Ecuadorian fishermen spotted Napa Castro drifting far off northern Peru’s coast. He was severely dehydrated, malnourished, and barely clinging to life.
“I thought I was going to die out there, but my family kept me alive,” Napa Castro told reporters through tears. “I didn’t want my mother to lose her son, and I needed to see my granddaughter again. Those thoughts gave me strength.”
Survival depended on Napa Castro’s extraordinary resourcefulness. He drank rainwater he carefully collected, and his diet consisted of insects, birds, and a turtle he managed to capture. But the final 15 days tested his limits; Napa Castro was left entirely without food.
His emotional daughter, Inés Napa Torres, took to social media to express gratitude toward the rescuers: “Thank you, Ecuadorian brothers, for rescuing my dad, Gatón. God bless you.”
Inés had earlier shared heart-wrenching updates during the prolonged search: “Every day brought anguish,” she wrote on Facebook. “I wouldn’t wish this situation on anyone. But we never lost hope.”
After receiving immediate medical care at Hospital Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Paita, near Peru’s border with Ecuador, Napa Castro was discharged in stable condition on March 15.
Local fisherman Eduardo Ortiz emphasized the miraculous nature of Napa Castro’s rescue, saying, “It’s a sign from God. No one survives three months at sea without divine intervention.”
As the fisherman recovers surrounded by family, his incredible tale of survival continues to inspire thousands, reinforcing the timeless American values of faith, perseverance, and the power of community.
