Florida’s healthcare system is bleeding taxpayer dollars. A new state report shows that nearly $660 million was spent on care for illegal immigrants in 2024. The data comes from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).

The report reveals 67,700 emergency room visits by patients who entered the country illegally. These visits led to about $76.6 million in Medicaid payments for emergency care. The AHCA’s dashboard now tracks hospital admissions and ER visits by immigration status.

Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law requiring hospitals to ask patients about their immigration status when billing Medicaid. While patients are not forced to answer, the change has already cut Medicaid billings for undocumented immigrants by 54%. In January, President Trump backed tougher measures by removing hospitals from the list of ICE-safe zones.

AHCA Deputy Secretary Kim Smoak said, “We remain dedicated to protecting taxpayer dollars from being used on those not lawfully present in the United States.” Her words underline the state’s drive to shield public funds.

State Rep. Randy Fine (R-Melbourne) blasted the spending, declaring, “That’s half a billion dollars stolen from real Floridians.”

His statement resonates with many who believe that Florida’s hard-earned dollars should serve its citizens—not those who break the law.

The burden is heaviest in Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade spent $282 million on healthcare for illegal immigrants. Broward County shelled out $77 million, Hillsborough County $64 million, Orange County $38 million, and Duval County $34 million. Rural counties with no hospitals reported no costs.

The debate is far from over. Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett recently told MSNBC that illegally entering the United States is not a crime. Critics quickly fired back. One conservative insider remarked,

“Illegal entry is a crime, and our system is paying the price.”
Her comments have sparked further outrage among conservative lawmakers.

Not all hospitals have complied with the new rules. Nearly two-thirds of patients at Tampa General Hospital-Spring Hill declined to answer the citizenship question. In Flagler Hospital near St. Augustine, 96% of ER patients refused to verify their status. These high refusal rates cast doubt on the effectiveness of the new policy.

Florida has long been at the center of the immigration debate. Conservative leaders argue that strict enforcement is needed to protect taxpayers. Gov. Ron DeSantis has been vocal on the issue. In a recent press conference, he stated,

“We will not tolerate our hard-earned tax dollars subsidizing illegal activity.”
His message strikes a chord with many Floridians who are fed up with wasted funds.

The new data paints a stark picture. With $660 million gone, the battle over illegal immigration and fiscal responsibility is set to intensify in the Sunshine State.
