In a dramatic sweep through Washington, D.C., U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents descended Tuesday morning on Chef Geoff’s, a posh restaurant owned by Geoff Tracy—husband of CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell.
While no one was arrested, the raid sent shockwaves through the capital’s elite dining scene and raised fresh questions about the media’s silence on illegal labor.
The ICE operation unfolded just after 10 a.m., when nearly a dozen agents in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) jackets entered the restaurant located on New Mexico Avenue. Armed with a warrant, they demanded access to the I-9 employment forms that verify workers’ legal immigration status. Witnesses say the staff panicked as agents swept through the kitchen and front-of-house.
“Everybody was freaking out,” said one employee, who spoke anonymously. “No one saw it coming. It was like they had the place surrounded.”
Chef Geoff’s, frequently frequented by the city’s political class, is the flagship restaurant of Geoff Tracy, a high-profile D.C. restaurateur married to O’Donnell, one of CBS News’ top anchors and a vocal critic of Trump-era immigration policies.
But while CBS wages war against Trump in primetime, critics are asking: is the network turning a blind eye to what’s happening in its own backyard?
Wider ICE Blitz Hits Liberal Strongholds
The raid on Chef Geoff’s wasn’t an isolated incident. ICE confirmed that several other restaurants in affluent D.C. neighborhoods, including Dupont Circle and Columbia Heights, were visited this week as part of an ongoing investigation into the employment of illegal immigrants in the hospitality industry.
At Millie’s, a trendy restaurant near Massachusetts Avenue, seven ICE agents reportedly entered simultaneously through all public doors. “It was coordinated and swift,” said owner Bob Blair. “We were under the impression ICE was focused on violent offenders. Now it feels like they’re targeting restaurants like we’re harboring fugitives.”
ICE has not commented on specific details but pointed to broader efforts to enforce federal immigration law under directives from the Trump administration.
“We are enforcing the law as written,” an ICE spokesperson told a local outlet. “Employers who flout federal hiring requirements undermine the legal workforce and incentivize illegal immigration.”
Political Tensions Boil Over
The raids immediately drew condemnation from left-leaning D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who claimed the enforcement actions were “disruptive” and “not focused on criminals.” But critics were quick to fire back, saying the mayor’s statements reflect the ongoing refusal of blue cities to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
“Every American should be asking why our laws are being ignored in plain sight,” said one DHS official. “These restaurants are knowingly employing undocumented workers while pretending they’re victims. It’s about accountability.”
Republicans are rallying around the crackdown. South Dakota Governor and former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, speaking on Fox News’ Hannity, praised the Trump administration’s aggressive approach. “This is what deterrence looks like,” she said. “We’re finally sending a message that illegal hiring practices won’t be tolerated.”
CBS in the Crosshairs
Adding fuel to the fire, CBS is currently facing a defamation lawsuit from President Trump, who alleges the network deceptively edited a 2024 interview with then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris to boost her campaign. The fact that CBS’s top anchor is now linked—indirectly—to a business targeted in an ICE sting has only intensified the spotlight.
As of publication, CBS News, Chef Geoff’s, and ICE have not responded to media inquiries. Norah O’Donnell has made no public comment on the matter.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about one restaurant. It’s about a broader culture clash between a federal government enforcing immigration law—and the elites who appear eager to ignore it.
As one ICE agent put it bluntly: “No one is above the law, not even the people serving dinner to TV anchors.”
Should restaurant owners be held responsible for hiring undocumented workers—or is Washington too comfortable to care?

DHS, ICE and BCP have leaders the have. Even charged to uphold the rule of law! In particular, immigration laws!
For too long DC elites, and media persons have been shielded by leftist politicians and compromised media elites who believe that they are above the law and entitled to do whatever they want! Well, there’s a new sheriff in town and enforcing to law is long overdue !
This sounds more like a retaliation move, a sort of “warning” to the wife that is the person on the news and critic against the current President’s policies. I wonder, if she had been a supporter of his instead of a critic, would they have still gone after the husband / his restaurant? I don’t think so.
They were correct in saying , “” Nobody is above the law”” ! That should include Donald Trump too ! The Felon should be serving time right now ! This is beginning to look more and more like the Gestapo and Nazi Germany.
ICE needs to go to Mar a Lago, because we know they hire illegal immigrants for less than minimum wage.
