In a dramatic turn of events, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now making a desperate attempt to repair his relationship with President Donald Trump after a heated confrontation in the Oval Office on Friday.
The contentious meeting, which erupted into a shouting match, ended with Zelensky’s delegation abruptly leaving Washington and a crucial U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal left in limbo.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that tensions boiled over when Vice President JD Vance questioned Zelensky’s level of gratitude for the immense financial and military aid the U.S. has provided Ukraine.
The line of questioning, reportedly backed by Trump, exposed the deep skepticism within the administration about Ukraine’s ongoing demands and strategy for ending the war with Russia. The confrontation only fueled the growing divide between Trump’s “America First” foreign policy and Ukraine’s continued reliance on U.S. support.
Zelensky’s Course Correction
Just days after the fiery encounter, Zelensky took to social media in an apparent effort to smooth things over. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), the Ukrainian leader admitted that the meeting “did not go the way it was supposed to” and called for a fresh start.
“It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” Zelensky stated, signaling a willingness to realign with the Trump administration’s expectations.
His statement also emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to securing a peace agreement, appearing to shift toward the conditions outlined by Trump’s team. The Ukrainian president reiterated his readiness to sign the stalled minerals agreement “at any time and in any convenient format,” highlighting the strategic importance of the deal for both nations.
A New Tone on Peace?
In what many see as an attempt to court Trump’s favor, Zelensky acknowledged Trump’s past support, stating: “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. And we remember the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this.”
The message marked a notable shift in tone, as Zelensky suggested that Ukraine is prepared to work “fast” on a ceasefire agreement with Russia. He outlined a preliminary framework that could include a prisoner exchange, a ban on aerial and naval warfare, and an end to strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure—contingent on Russia’s cooperation.
White House Reacts Cautiously
Despite Zelensky’s overtures, White House officials remain skeptical. According to a senior administration insider, Trump is unlikely to move forward on any deals until Zelensky makes a public, on-camera apology for the Oval Office clash.
Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy reported that a high-ranking White House source made it clear: “No progress will happen until Zelensky goes in front of cameras and makes an explicit public apology for the way he behaved in the Oval Office.”
Republican Leaders Weigh In
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson cautiously welcomed Zelensky’s outreach but emphasized that the Ukrainian president still has work to do in repairing relations. “I’m heartened by the development that President Zelensky has indicated that he does want to do this deal after all,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. “But he needs to come and make right what happened last week—the shocking developments in the Oval Office.”
Meanwhile, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz signaled that Trump’s team remains firm in their stance that Ukraine must be willing to make real concessions in peace talks. Speaking on Sunday, Waltz suggested that territorial compromises may be necessary to bring the conflict to a close—something that Zelensky has thus far staunchly opposed.
What’s Next?
With tensions still simmering, the next steps remain uncertain. Zelensky has expressed willingness to return to Washington if invited, but whether he will receive that invitation depends largely on his willingness to align with Trump’s vision for U.S.-Ukraine relations.
For now, the ball is in Zelensky’s court. If he hopes to secure continued American support, he will need to navigate the shifting political landscape carefully—balancing Ukraine’s strategic needs with Trump’s clear “America First” priorities.

Too dumb to comment on! 🤪
I hate being a party to the American Bullies! We, as Americans, should stand in support of Ukraine and it’s people and fight against the Russian invading agressors. I stand with Ukraine defending ALL of Ukraine’s territory from its Russian agressor bullies! And, I find it disgusting that Zelinsky has to apoligize to the very rude Trump to be able to get the help needed to defend it’s territory. What has happened to the United States? Perhaps our leadership isn’t what we thought we voted for afterall???
