A horrifying act of violence shook York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when a gunman stormed UPMC Memorial Hospital, killing a courageous officer and injuring five others before being taken down by law enforcement.

The suspect, identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, walked into the hospital’s intensive care unit around 10:30 a.m. armed with a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties. His target: hospital staff, whom he held hostage as terrified patients and medical personnel scrambled for cover.

“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” York County District Attorney Tim Barker said. “Officer Duarte gave his life protecting innocent people. His heroism will not be forgotten.”

Chaos Unfolds

Witnesses described the scene as pure panic. “I heard shouting and then gunshots,” said a hospital employee who asked to remain anonymous. “I locked myself in a supply closet and just prayed.”

Ortiz, whose motives remain unclear, shot three hospital workers—a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian—before turning his weapon on responding officers. West York Borough Officer Andrew Duarte, 36, was fatally struck. Two other officers were wounded but remain in stable condition. The hospital employees are also expected to recover.

Brave Officers Take Action

A rapid and forceful response from multiple law enforcement agencies, including Pennsylvania State Police and the York County Quick Response Team, prevented further bloodshed. Officers attempted to negotiate, but Ortiz escalated the situation when he emerged from the ICU holding a female hospital worker hostage, her hands bound in zip ties.

Faced with no other option, police opened fire, killing Ortiz on the spot.

“After reviewing footage and speaking with witnesses, there’s no doubt our officers acted bravely and lawfully,” Barker stated. “Frankly, they had no choice—this man was intent on destruction.”

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are still piecing together the motive behind the attack. Governor Josh Shapiro praised law enforcement for their swift response, saying, “The bravery of our officers stopped this from becoming an even greater tragedy.”

Meanwhile, local residents are mourning the loss of Officer Duarte, a father of two and a decorated veteran of the force. “He was the best of us,” said fellow officer Mark Reynolds. “A true patriot, a hero.”

State police remain on the scene conducting a thorough investigation. As York County comes to terms with this senseless attack, one thing is clear—evil exists, but so does the courage to confront it.
