In a scene straight out of a Hollywood thriller, Michigan police used a drink dangling from a drone to bait a bank gunman out of hiding — giving a police sniper the split-second opportunity to end a tense, hours-long hostage crisis with a single deadly shot.

The dramatic standoff unfolded Friday evening in Saginaw Township, where a man armed with a gun stormed into Mercantile Bank on State Street and took a bank employee hostage. The chaos started around 5:30 p.m., turning the heart of the town’s commercial strip into a lockdown zone.

“He had one person inside, and he wasn’t coming out,” said Michigan State Police Lt. Kim Vetter. “Negotiators were talking to him for hours. He was hot, stressed, and asking for something to drink.”

That’s when officers got creative. As crowds gathered nearby, police deployed a drone equipped with a beverage — an apparent act of goodwill that doubled as tactical bait. When the suspect stepped outside to retrieve the drink, he briefly exposed himself.

That was all the time a state trooper sniper needed.

“When he reached for the drink, the sharpshooter took the shot,” Vetter confirmed. “It ended right there.”

Moments later, an explosion-like sound rattled the area — likely from a distraction device used by SWAT — and ambulances rushed to the scene. The suspect was pronounced dead shortly after. His name has not been released.

The hostage, identified only as a bank employee, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say they are recovering and have since been discharged in good condition.

“We’re just thankful this didn’t end worse,” said Saginaw Township Police Chief Don Pussehl. “Our officers used restraint and strategy to bring this to a close.”

Video of the bizarre climax, recorded by bystanders, showed officers pleading with gawkers to stop filming as the drone buzzed toward the building. One witness said the entire street went silent just before the gunfire rang out.

The motive behind the hostage-taker’s actions remains unclear. Police are investigating whether the man had any connection to the bank or the employee he held captive.

Saginaw Township, located roughly 100 miles northwest of Detroit, has rarely seen this kind of incident. Locals say the event shook the small business corridor — and the clever use of a drone has now become the talk of the town.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said one witness, who watched the final moments unfold from a nearby parking lot. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
