Washington, D.C. — The family of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is raising alarms over the upcoming release of long-classified government documents, fearing they could revive decades-old attempts to tarnish the civil rights leader’s reputation.
President Donald Trump, in a sweeping executive order last month, directed the release of records tied to both King and former President John F. Kennedy—two historical figures whose deaths have fueled speculation and conspiracy theories for decades. However, in a move stirring controversy, the White House reportedly denied a request from King’s family to review the documents before their public release.
Concerns Over FBI’s Past Actions
The King family’s fears stem from the FBI’s well-documented surveillance of Dr. King during the 1960s, a time when J. Edgar Hoover’s agency saw him as a threat. Hoover personally approved an aggressive campaign to discredit King, compiling files on his private life and even sending an anonymous letter urging him to abandon his leadership—or worse.
“We know the FBI, under Hoover, worked tirelessly to destroy Dr. King’s legacy,” a close family friend told Axios. “They couldn’t stop him in life, but they certainly tried to ruin him in death. The family doesn’t want those efforts to be legitimized now.”
Sources close to the family say they worry that old, unverified claims—previously dismissed as Hoover-era propaganda—could resurface and overshadow King’s monumental contributions to American history. “This isn’t about transparency,” one source said. “It’s about reviving a smear campaign under the guise of openness.”
White House Defends Decision
The Trump administration, however, sees it differently. A White House spokesperson pushed back against the family’s request, telling Axios, “These records don’t belong to them. These are the public’s records.”
Supporters of the document release argue that the American people deserve full access to their history, regardless of how controversial it may be. “The truth should never be hidden,” said one senior White House official. “Dr. King was a towering figure, but history should be seen in full, not filtered.”
As the release date nears, the debate intensifies: Will these documents bring long-sought clarity or reignite old attacks? For now, the King family waits anxiously—watching, and hoping history does not repeat itself.
