In a move hailed as historic by transparency advocates, President Donald Trump has ordered the release of 80,000 previously classified documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
“For decades, the American people have been kept in the dark. No more,” Trump declared while touring the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. “I told my people, ‘No redactions, no hiding the truth.’ The files are coming out, and it’s about time.”
What the Files Could Reveal
Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, who has extensively studied the JFK assassination, says the release may expose government missteps, conflicting evidence, or even confirm long-held suspicions about a conspiracy.
“We always knew there were gaps in the official account,” Baden told reporters. “The Warren Commission’s report left a lot of questions unanswered, fueling speculation for 60 years. This could be the final piece of the puzzle.”
Many experts have long criticized the 1963 autopsy conducted by Dr. James Humes, an inexperienced pathologist assigned to the case. Baden confirmed that a congressional review of the autopsy decades later found serious errors.
“He missed key evidence,” Baden said. “That’s why conspiracy theories have thrived. People felt they weren’t getting the full story.”
Who Really Killed JFK?
The Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, firing three shots from the Texas School Book Depository. However, skeptics point to conflicting witness accounts, the so-called “magic bullet” theory, and forensic inconsistencies that suggest multiple shooters.
“There’s always been doubt,” said Roger Stone, a political strategist and longtime JFK conspiracy theorist. “The CIA had motive, the mafia had motive, and let’s not forget Oswald’s ties to Cuba and Russia. These documents might finally prove what we’ve suspected all along.”
Even members of the Kennedy family have expressed skepticism. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has repeatedly claimed the CIA was involved in a cover-up.
“The American people deserve the truth,” RFK Jr. said in a recent interview. “We know the government withheld evidence. The question is, why?”
National Security or National Embarrassment?
Intelligence agencies have fought for years to keep portions of the JFK files classified, citing national security concerns. Dr. Baden suggests the real reason may be less about security and more about protecting reputations.
“The FBI, the CIA — they don’t want to admit mistakes,” he said. “There may be embarrassing details about what the government knew and failed to act on.”
Some believe the documents could reveal damning information about U.S. intelligence operations at the time, including the extent of CIA surveillance on Oswald before the assassination.
What Happens Next?
With the files set for release, Americans are bracing for bombshell revelations — or, potentially, more questions than answers.
“Either this confirms Oswald acted alone, or it blows the case wide open,” said historian Douglas Brinkley. “The truth has been buried for six decades. We’re about to find out if it’s finally coming to light.”
Trump, never one to shy away from controversy, made it clear that he expects the release to be a defining moment in history.
“I don’t know what’s in there,” he said. “But I do know the American people deserve the truth. And I always deliver.”
