Former President Donald Trump, barely a week into his second term, sparked a fresh round of debate Monday when he jokingly asked House Speaker Mike Johnson if he could run for a third term. The question came during a meeting with House Republicans at Trump’s Doral resort in Florida, where Trump seemed to toe the line between jest and a not-so-subtle suggestion.

“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100 percent sure,” Trump quipped. Turning to Johnson, a constitutional lawyer before entering politics, he added with a grin, “Am I allowed to run again? Mike, I better not get you involved in that argument.”

The room reportedly erupted in laughter, but the idea of repealing the 22nd Amendment—limiting presidents to two terms—is no longer confined to jokes. Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles recently proposed a constitutional amendment to allow Trump to serve a third term.

A “Time to Finish the Job”?

In a statement, Ogles argued, “President Trump has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness. He must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

The proposed amendment would permit Trump, and only Trump, to run for a third term. Conveniently, it excludes other two-term presidents like Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Critics have already labeled the move as blatant favoritism, while Ogles maintains that Trump is a “unique case.”

Trump, who would be 82 years old on Election Day 2028, has been dropping hints about extending his time in office since winning reelection. At a Las Vegas rally last weekend, he joked about serving “three times or four times,” a comment met with thunderous applause from his base.

History Revisited

While talk of repealing the 22nd Amendment is not new, it has rarely been taken seriously in modern politics. The amendment was ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency. Roosevelt’s long tenure led to concerns about executive overreach, a sentiment shared by conservatives of the era.

However, Trump’s supporters argue that America’s current challenges—economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and cultural divides—warrant an exception to tradition.

Mark Davidson, a retiree from Sarasota, said, “This country needs strong leadership, and if that means bending a few rules for Trump, so be it. He’s done more in four years than most presidents manage in eight.”

The Legal Reality

Legal scholars remain skeptical of the proposal’s viability. “Amending the Constitution is an arduous process,” noted Professor Ellen Carter of Georgetown Law. “It requires a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate, plus ratification by 38 states. The political will for such a drastic change just isn’t there.”

But for Trump’s most ardent supporters, the legal and logistical hurdles are secondary to the sentiment. As Trump himself has often said, “If it’s about winning, we’ll find a way.”

For now, Trump’s third-term talk remains a mix of humor and hyperbole. But with allies like Ogles ready to champion the cause, it’s clear the idea is gaining traction—at least among those who believe Trump’s presidency is far from over.

“He’s just saying what we’re all thinking,” said Joanne Michaels, a retiree from Ohio. “Why stop at two terms when he’s clearly the best man for the job?”

Whether the nation is ready for such a seismic shift—or whether Trump himself is serious—remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: in Trump’s America, nothing is off the table.

  1. Yes, because he skipped a term so in reality this is his first term in office so he can succeed himself 1 more term before the Constitutional Restriction. There hasn\’t been a 3 or 4 term US President since FDR who served from 1933 to his death in office in 1945 all through the Depression Years and during the 2nd World War.

  2. THIRD TERM????? are you f____ing Kidding? or Insane??? You would think that “the PRESIDENT” would at least know what the CONSTITUTION of the country he represents says. Is he illiterate too? The only thing he represents is his own self interests and the desire to become dictator

  3. I support Pres. Trump for this term. I do not believe he should run for a third. Would require Constitutional Amendment and JD Vance will be a good successor without all the drama.

  4. No sy.  This is a democracy not an authoritarian government.  You are not a king you are the devilSent from my iPad

  5. Look trump isn\’t as stupid as he acts he knows he will not be able to run a third term look I heard congress as authority to have President remove so they need to do that is if they care about all people in america at this point I think most people would rather deal with J D

  6. NO, NO, NO! Trump believes that he could run the world. Look at what he’s doing today; freed over a hundred idiots that were involved on January 6th incident, and going after Immigrants. God created the world for all human beings.

  7. If a president is limited to two terms then it should be the same for the House and the Senate. We need to keep term limits for ALL representatives to be fair. These life-long congressmen and senators is ridiculous and that’s how they become corrupt. They are also there to serve our country, so they should not get lifelong insurance or paychecks. They get paid while they serve and they can put part of their wages into a 401K which they can continue to contribute to when they leave office and go back to the private sector to work, but when their civic duty of service is done after those 1 or 2 terms (depending if they get voted back in for a second term) their pay and insurance seize (unless it’s a private insurance they buy personally, then they would just continue with it as long as the taxpayers are not paying for it). They also should not get these lifelong pensions either.

  8. If this allowed, trump would never leave office. There would no longer be a US. We would be worse than Russia! Do you not see what that fool is doing, Project 2025, that part that he didn’t know about! Stop with the foolishness and let’s just get these four over with. Poor whites will be hurt the most, because of their love for trump and wanting to hurt everybody else!!
