In a heated exchange that left many union members stunned, Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly delivered a bold ultimatum to Teamsters’ president Sean O’Brien during a high-stakes meeting last July.
According to O’Brien, Harris confidently declared, “I’m going to win with you or without you,” as she sought the Teamsters’ backing for her presidential bid following President Biden’s abrupt withdrawal from the race. This encounter, as revealed by O’Brien during an interview on The Tucker Carlson Show, marked a pivotal moment in Harris’ doomed campaign.
The Teamsters, a powerhouse in labor politics, broke a 30-year tradition by refusing to endorse any presidential candidate in the 2024 election. O’Brien’s recount of the meeting paints a picture of frustration and discontent. “She only answered three out of 16 questions we had prepared,” O’Brien shared.
“Then she abruptly left the roundtable 20 minutes early, but not before throwing that parting shot.” He added, “I couldn’t believe the arrogance. Who does this f—— lady think she is?” Carlson’s reaction mirrored the sentiment: “D—. I thought I was arrogant. That’s really arrogant.” This unprecedented decision by the Teamsters to abstain from endorsing a candidate proved catastrophic for Harris, who failed to rally the support needed to overcome her Republican rival, Donald Trump.
The Teamsters’ decision was not without precedent, but it underscored a broader frustration with Harris’ campaign. In 2016 and 2020, the union had backed Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and the Biden-Harris ticket, respectively. Their absence in 2024 sent shockwaves through the political landscape.
“It was clear that her approach alienated us,” a senior Teamsters’ official explained. “She underestimated the importance of our support.” Harris’ campaign, meanwhile, faced scrutiny over extravagant spending. Reports revealed millions poured into celebrity endorsements, private jets, and activist groups. Yet, even after her defeat, the campaign continued soliciting donations to cover recount efforts and ballooning debts.
The donation requests sparked outrage online, with critics accusing Harris of exploiting her supporters. On X (formerly Twitter), users didn’t hold back: “SKamala Harris is asking for donations to fund a recount. Seriously?” one user wrote. Another claimed, “Harris is bamboozling her supporters to pay off $20 million in debt.” A senior campaign official expressed dismay, calling the fundraising “appalling,” while another labeled it “disgusting.”
As Harris retreats from the spotlight, political analysts are left pondering the lessons of her campaign. “This was a case study in how not to connect with critical voter bases,” said political strategist Angela Rivera. Meanwhile, O’Brien’s account of the confrontation remains a stark reminder of the stakes in labor politics.
“Respect is earned,” he stated. “You don’t demand it in a 20-minute meeting.” Whether Harris can recover from this political misstep remains uncertain. But for now, her journey serves as a cautionary tale of overconfidence meeting its match.
