Prince William and Kate Middleton made waves by skipping King Charles’ traditional pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, a gathering that typically includes the extended royal family. While their absence fueled speculation, insiders claim it was not intended as a slight.
A former royal courtier, speaking anonymously to The Daily Beast, stated, “This is another sign of William and Kate’s growing confidence in pushing back against royal conventions they find tiresome. Charles would have wanted them there, but the fact that he didn’t press the issue speaks to his inability to maintain family unity. You wouldn’t have seen this when Prince Philip was around.”
However, a friend of the couple strongly disagreed with the courtier’s assessment. “It’s absolutely not a snub,” they insisted. “They’ve had a grueling year, and no one can reasonably expect Catherine to host a lunch for hundreds of people right now.”
An official source close to the couple added, “They’ve been through an incredibly difficult year and simply wanted to start their Christmas in Norfolk a bit earlier this time.”
Earlier this year, Kate was diagnosed with cancer but has since made a remarkable recovery, now being cancer-free. Her health battle, combined with the usual demands of royal life, likely played a role in their decision to skip the event.
To mark the season, the couple released their Christmas card featuring a family photo taken shortly after Kate completed her chemotherapy. The image, showing William, Kate, and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—embracing one another, was accompanied by the message: “Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year.”
Sources revealed that the decision not to attend the lunch was made well in advance, and it was not the first absence of the day. Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, were also missing from the gathering. Andrew’s absence is linked to his recent involvement in a scandal involving espionage and financial misconduct.
It was reported last week that Andrew had been in a business partnership with Yang Tengbo, a wealthy Chinese national who was banned from the UK for suspected espionage activities. As a result, Andrew will not be joining the royals for Christmas celebrations either. This marks a significant shift, as just a year ago, Sarah Ferguson was invited to join the family for a public walk to church—a rare and notable moment in royal history.
Meanwhile, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were present at the lunch, accompanied by their husbands, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank. Princess Eugenie’s 3-year-old son, August, was photographed arriving in a car, fast asleep, wearing a festive Santa hat.
Also present at the lunch were Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Lady Gabriella Windsor, whose husband tragically died by suicide earlier this year, was also in attendance.
As the royal family continues to navigate internal tensions and public scrutiny, this Christmas lunch highlights not just personal decisions, but also the evolving dynamics within the monarchy. What does it say about the future of the royal family when long-standing traditions are increasingly questioned? Only time will tell.
