The future of FX’s critically acclaimed series English Teacher hangs in the balance following sexual assault allegations against its creator and star, Brian Jordan Alvarez.

Despite the show’s breakout success, which includes multiple award nominations, FX has yet to announce a second season, leaving fans and industry insiders speculating about its fate.

The allegations, detailed in a recent Vulture investigation, stem from an incident in 2016. Jon Ebeling, a former collaborator of Alvarez, claims he was sexually assaulted during the filming of The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, a popular web series created by Alvarez.

According to Ebeling, he filed a police report and contacted the Screen Actors Guild the day before English Teacher premiered. In a statement to The Daily Beast, FX acknowledged reviewing the allegations prior to the show’s launch but added, “Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”

English Teacher has been a critical darling, earning nominations at the Critics Choice Awards and Independent Spirit Awards. Alvarez himself is nominated for Best Lead Performance at the Indie Spirits, competing against acting heavyweights like Julianne Moore and Hiroyuki Sanada. Stephanie Koenig, Alvarez’s co-star and longtime collaborator, is also nominated for her supporting role.

However, the personal relationships intertwined with these allegations add a complex layer to the controversy. Ebeling was reportedly dating Koenig at the time of the alleged assault. In the Vulture report, Koenig dismissed Ebeling’s claims, interpreting them as infidelity rather than assault. This disagreement ultimately led to their breakup.

“When I tried to share my story,” Ebeling told Vulture, “people either didn’t believe me or accused me of being jealous of Brian’s success.”

Despite its critical acclaim, the future of English Teacher is now clouded by uncertainty. The show, which boasts a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was named one of the best TV shows of the year by The New York Times, has yet to receive a renewal announcement.

“FX is aware of the allegations and has yet to renew it for a second season,” Vulture wrote, a statement that underscores the precarious position the network finds itself in.

Ebeling began hinting at his story years before filing his report. In a now-deleted social media post, he shared a promotional poster for English Teacher alongside the cryptic caption, “My experience with the creator was much closer to the plot of Baby Reindeer than this show.” Baby Reindeer, a play that explores themes of obsession and abuse, drew a stark parallel to the accusations.

The allegations have sparked a heated debate among fans and critics alike. Some question the ethics of supporting a show tied to such serious claims, while others emphasize the importance of due process.

As FX remains tight-lipped, speculation grows. Could the network distance itself from the controversy by quietly shelving the series? Or will the acclaim and awards momentum compel them to move forward despite the allegations?

For now, fans are left in limbo, eagerly awaiting news about the show’s fate. As one fan tweeted, “We love English Teacher, but we need accountability. The silence is deafening.”
