Donna Gregory, a cherished veteran news anchor from North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday after battling Stage 4 lung cancer since her diagnosis in April.

WWAY 3, the station where Gregory worked, announced the heartbreaking news on Wednesday, describing her as “the heart of every room she entered.”

Gregory’s death came after months of enduring a grueling medical journey.

In a heartfelt message shared with viewers earlier this year, she revealed that persistent coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, and weight loss led her to seek a biopsy that confirmed the devastating diagnosis. Despite the gravity of her illness, Gregory vowed to fight with unwavering faith and determination.

“I will be off the air for a while so I can undergo the treatment protocol doctors create,” she wrote in April. “My plan is to get stronger and healthier each day, and prayers help, always. There is a breeze of beauty in all of this.”

A Career of Excellence and Compassion

Gregory joined WWAY 3 in 2019, originally filling in for anchor Randy Aldridge during his own battle with cancer. Her talent and warmth quickly earned her a permanent position, where she became a mentor to young journalists and a trusted voice for viewers. Her decades-long career also included stints at major networks like CNN and MSNBC.

WWAY 3 praised Gregory’s resilience in the face of adversity, stating that she “confronted her illness with grace and determination, undergoing immunotherapy and chemotherapy while remaining a beacon of hope and inspiration.”

The station plans to hold a tribute honoring her legacy, recognizing her immeasurable contributions to journalism and the lives of those she touched.

A Personal Legacy of Love and Faith

While Gregory’s career accomplishments were many, her children remember her for qualities that transcended her professional success. In a moving Facebook post, they described her as “so much more” than her career accolades.

“She was the heart of every room she entered, always making everyone feel welcome and at ease. She could create a meal out of anything in the fridge, turning ordinary moments into something special,” they shared.

Known for her unshakable positivity and devotion to family, Gregory’s loved ones highlighted her humor and talents, recalling her “loud whistle at sporting events” and her ability to master the impossible task of folding a fitted sheet.

“We always knew we could count on her to drop everything for us, answer every question, and ground us in her strong faith and deep love for Jesus,” they added.

Survived by Loved Ones

Gregory leaves behind her children—Sam, Callan, Avery, and Everett—along with her grandchildren Hayes and Coley, daughter-in-law Amanda, and son-in-law Shane. Her family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, which admired her for both her journalistic integrity and her boundless compassion.

Her passing marks the end of a remarkable life that enriched countless others. As WWAY 3 expressed, “Her death leaves a void that words alone cannot fill. Donna Gregory will be profoundly missed.”
