“You show me who to tackle and I’ll do it.” – Dean Wells, 2024
Former NFL linebacker and American fighter Dean Wells, best known for his time with the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, passed away on April 3 at the age of 54 after a hard-fought battle with leukemia. He leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and their two sons.
The Panthers confirmed Wells’ passing in a Friday statement, calling him “a relentless competitor and beloved teammate.”
Wells was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2023 — a brutal form of blood cancer. But just like he did on the gridiron, he met the challenge head-on, undergoing a bone marrow transplant in May 2024 and staying optimistic through every round of chemo.
“This is in the doctors’ hands — and it’s in God’s hands,” Wells said during a powerful interview with Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) last year.
Wells was more than just a football player. He was a husband, father, and believer in hard work, faith, and the American spirit. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he played college ball for the University of Kentucky before being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 1993. He spent six seasons in Seattle before finishing out his career with the Panthers.
Across nine seasons in the NFL, Wells racked up over 529 tackles, 3 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, and a reputation for grit, toughness, and discipline — values America could use a lot more of these days.
After his diagnosis, Wells became a vocal advocate for cancer awareness, encouraging Americans to donate blood, support research, and keep fighting no matter what the odds.
His words were pure red-blooded resolve:
“There’s mental toughness that comes into it,” Wells told KSR. “You have to believe you can beat it. The chemo either works or it doesn’t — you wish you had more control. But I’ve done everything I can.”
By the fall of 2023, Wells had gone into remission — briefly. The cancer returned just as his alma mater’s football season was about to kick off. Still, he pressed on. Friends, fans, and former teammates rallied around him.
“You’re one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met,” they told him. “We know you’ll beat this.”
Even in his final months, Wells poured his energy into faith, family, and country. He gave back quietly — through donations, blood drives, and spreading hope.
This is the kind of man we should be talking about. Not celebrities, not activists. A real American who worked hard, believed in God, loved his family, and never backed down from a fight.
Rest in peace, Dean Wells. You fought the good fight — and you inspired thousands to keep standing tall.
