A Friday night high school football game in Kentucky descended into chaos when spectators stormed the field and a woman allegedly grabbed a teenage player from behind, choking him so severely that he struggled to breathe, authorities said.
Kayla Barrett, 36, of East Bernstadt, is facing a felony strangulation charge following the shocking confrontation during an Oct. 30 matchup between Wayne County High School and North Laurel High School in Monticello.
The trouble erupted during the third quarter, with North Laurel leading 21-12 and just over six minutes remaining. After players became involved in a confrontation near the sideline, spectators from both teams rushed onto the field, turning an already heated football game into a chaotic scene.
According to an arrest warrant, Barrett allegedly approached a Wayne County player from behind, placed both hands around his neck and violently shook him in an attempt to restrict his breathing.
Monticello Assistant Police Chief Joshua Smith described the disturbing allegations to local television station WYMT.
“From what I understand she ran toward the action. And somewhere in that scuffle, she grabbed one of the Wayne County athletes by the back of the neck and began choking him and shaking him,” Smith said.
The teenage player, whose identity has not been released because he is a minor, reportedly experienced difficulty breathing and was taken to Wayne County Hospital for medical evaluation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed his current condition.
Investigators said several witnesses observed the alleged assault. Footage obtained from North Laurel’s football program also reportedly showed Barrett near the location where the incident occurred, although authorities have not said whether the video captured the alleged choking itself.
Following an investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant, and Kentucky State Police took Barrett into custody on Nov. 3. She was charged with second-degree strangulation and booked into the Laurel County Detention Center.
Barrett was released the following day on a $5,000 cash bond, according to jail records. A judge also reportedly ordered her to stay away from all school sporting events throughout Kentucky as a condition of her release.
The frightening confrontation brought the football game to an abrupt end, with North Laurel ahead 21-12. What should have been an ordinary high school matchup instead became the subject of a criminal investigation.
North Laurel coach Steven Nelson expressed disappointment over the ugly ending, acknowledging that emotions had gotten out of hand.
“We have to do better on our end keeping emotions in check and playing the game the right way,” Nelson said.
Monticello police also condemned the alleged violence, emphasizing that students should never have to fear for their safety while participating in school sports.
“High school athletics should be an environment where student-athletes can compete safely, without fear of violence or intimidation,” the department said.
Barrett is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 7 as the investigation continues. She has not been convicted of the charge.
