Martha Stewart is facing a fierce backlash over a Halloween costume that critics say crossed the line, forcing the lifestyle icon to delete a controversial photo and issue a public apology.

The 85-year-old businesswoman, famous for her picture-perfect holiday celebrations, stunned social media users when she dressed as a homeless person for Halloween, complete with torn clothing, dirt-smeared makeup and a sign begging for food.

But what made the costume particularly controversial was where Stewart chose to share it: in an Instagram post that also promoted candles from her QVC collection.

The photo, posted on October 31, showed Stewart wearing ripped jeans and a worn-looking outfit while holding a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” Although the image was quickly deleted, screenshots spread across social media, sparking accusations that the wealthy television personality was making light of people struggling with poverty and homelessness.

Critics called the costume “offensive” and “out of touch,” questioning how someone with Stewart’s enormous wealth and influence could consider homelessness an appropriate Halloween theme.

Stewart initially defended the costume in a statement to Page Six on Sunday, November 1, insisting that she had intended to raise awareness about homelessness rather than mock those experiencing it. She said she was distressed that people had taken offense and emphasized that she had spent considerable time supporting charities working to address the crisis.

The explanation, however, stopped short of an outright apology. Stewart, who has built a fortune through her television shows, cookbooks and lifestyle empire, also described homelessness as one of America’s greatest challenges and pledged to continue supporting efforts to combat it.

But hours later, Stewart changed her tune. In a second statement posted to Instagram, the lifestyle mogul acknowledged that her initial response had fallen short.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” Stewart wrote, describing her costume as “insensitive and not funny” before offering an explicit apology to those she had offended. People.com+1

Even that apology failed to satisfy everyone. “Pose” actress Indya Moore criticized Stewart’s explanation, arguing that a wealthy celebrity dressing as someone experiencing homelessness highlighted the disconnect between the rich and those struggling to survive. Other critics questioned whether Stewart would take meaningful action to address the problem, while some supporters defended her decision to acknowledge her mistake and urged people to move on. The controversy marks an embarrassing turn for Stewart, whose elaborate Halloween costumes have been part of her public image for decades. From glamorous historical figures to elaborate fantasy characters, she has long embraced the holiday as an opportunity to showcase her creativity, often celebrating alongside longtime friend Snoop Dogg.

This year, however, what began as another Halloween celebration turned into a public relations nightmare, leaving Stewart facing uncomfortable questions about wealth, privilege and the judgment behind a costume she now admits was a mistake.
