In a rare but heated response, Martha Stewart’s ex-husband, Andy Stewart, 86, didn’t hold back after being labeled a “piece of s–t” by the iconic homemaker in her new Netflix documentary, Martha. Stewart’s decades-old marriage to Andy, riddled with accusations of infidelity and betrayal, has sparked fresh drama as the former spouses exchange blows in the media spotlight.

The documentary, a deep dive into Martha’s remarkable life and career, doesn’t shy away from the scandalous moments of her personal history, including her turbulent marriage to Andy, with whom she was married for 29 years before their 1990 divorce. Martha described Andy as “a piece of s–t,” accusing him of having multiple girlfriends throughout their marriage. “I don’t know how many,” she confesses in the film, openly grappling with the betrayal.

But Andy isn’t taking this portrayal lying down. Using his current wife Shyla Nelson Stewart’s Facebook page, the couple posted a joint statement, casting Andy as the one who endured hardship in the relationship. “Prior to this happy chapter in his life, Andy had some dark ones, including a painful and abusive marriage to Martha,” they wrote in a post signed by both Andy and Shyla. The couple emphasized that while Andy “quietly moved on” from the past, Martha appears fixated on dredging up old wounds for the public.

Friends of the Stewarts claim Andy was “furious” about Martha’s decision to reopen old wounds on such a public platform. Even before Martha premiered, sources close to Andy, including his children and neighbors, hinted to NewsNation that he felt betrayed by her revelations.

The Netflix special doesn’t just focus on Martha’s business empire, spanning her early days on Wall Street to her mega-successful homemaking brands and infamous prison sentence. It’s the personal insights into her marriage that are striking, with Martha candidly advising other women to end marriages if they sense infidelity. “If you’re married and you think you’re happily married, and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s–t,” she said bluntly. “Look at him as a piece of s–t and get out of it…but I couldn’t do that.”

Adding more intrigue, Martha herself admitted to a “brief affair” with a “very attractive Irish man” early in her relationship with Andy. She also recalled sharing a kiss with a stranger during their honeymoon while Andy waited obliviously back at the hotel. “It wasn’t naughty or unfaithful,” she insisted. “It was just emotional of the moment. It was exciting.”

Despite the accusations, Andy’s sister, Diane Stewart Love, suggests there may still be a deep-seated connection between the two. “Martha has always cared deeply for my brother. She just hasn’t let go of that,” Diane shared with Page Six, hinting at the possibility that old feelings still linger.

Andy and Shyla ended their statement with a surprising sentiment of reconciliation, writing about the stark contrast between Andy’s “early life” and the “joy-filled, purpose-led, loving marriage” they share today. In a final dig, they wished Martha “the experience of loving and being loved deeply and fully.”

As Martha garners views on Netflix, the documentary stands as both a career testament and a testament to a marriage long dissolved—but apparently, never forgotten.
