A family vacation in Florida turned into an unimaginable tragedy after 5-year-old twin sisters were found unresponsive at the bottom of a swimming pool at a rental home.

The apparent drowning happened Friday, June 12, at a vacation house in Kissimmee, Florida, just south of Orlando, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders were called to the home shortly after 11 a.m. after the twin girls were found in the pool.

Authorities said both children were pulled from the water unresponsive. They were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where they were pronounced dead several hours later.

The girls and their family were visiting the area from Georgia, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators told News 6 that four adults staying at the rental property had left the home to buy food. A 15-year-old was reportedly at the house at the time of the incident.

Homicide detectives are investigating the deaths, which officials said is standard procedure in child death cases. The local medical examiner will determine the girls’ official cause of death.

“Unfortunately, this is a tragedy,” Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kim Montes told News 6.

Montes also issued a warning about pool safety, especially during the summer and in vacation rentals.

“We want to remind people: pool safety is No. 1 this time of year, and a lot of the drownings and near drowning in the county occur in the rental properties,” she said.

The heartbreaking deaths come as Florida continues to see a troubling number of child drownings. According to the Orlando Sentinel, 50 children have died from drowning in Florida so far in 2026, with victims ranging in age from 4 to 8.

Nationally, about 4,000 children die from unintentional drowning in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drowning is also the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4.

The investigation into the twins’ deaths remains ongoing.
