Nearly a month after a devastating New Year’s Eve fireworks explosion rocked a quiet neighborhood in Aliamanu, another victim has tragically succumbed to his injuries. Kevin Vallesteros, a 29-year-old father, passed away in an Arizona burn center after a grueling fight against severe burns and infections.
Vallesteros was one of six individuals transported from Hawaii to Arizona following the explosion on Keaka Drive. According to medical officials, he suffered burns covering over 80% of his body and sustained a compound fracture in his leg. His family, standing by his side throughout his battle, expressed their sorrow but also gratitude for the outpouring of community support.
A Family’s Heartbreak
“Kevin fought as hard as he could, but his body just couldn’t take it anymore,” his sister shared in a heartfelt statement. “We are grateful for the love and prayers from everyone who supported us in Arizona and Hawaii. The care he received at Valley Wise Health and from the Arizona Burn Foundation was beyond anything we could have hoped for.”
The Arizona Burn Foundation has stepped in to assist the Vallesteros family, covering funeral costs and helping transport Kevin’s remains back home to Hawaii. A GoFundMe campaign, initially set up to cover medical expenses, has now raised over $8,500 to support these efforts.
A Devastating Incident
The explosion, which occurred just after midnight on January 1st, claimed the lives of five individuals, including a 3-year-old child. Authorities have yet to release official findings on the cause of the blast, though fireworks-related incidents have been an increasing concern in the state.
Community leaders are now calling for stricter regulations on consumer fireworks. “We cannot keep losing lives like this,” said State Representative Mark Kahale. “Every year, we see tragedies stemming from illegal fireworks, and we need to address this problem before more families suffer.”
Honoring Kevin’s Memory
Vallesteros, described as a devoted father and a hardworking family man, leaves behind a young child and grieving loved ones. “He had dreams for his future, dreams for his son,” said longtime friend Jacob Nani. “We are heartbroken that those dreams were cut short.”
As the investigation continues, Vallesteros’ family is focused on bringing him home and ensuring his memory lives on. “We know he’s at peace now, but our fight isn’t over,” his sister said. “We will keep pushing for answers and for change.”
For those who wish to support the family, donations can be made through their GoFundMe page.
