King Charles III reportedly has no plans to meet with his son Prince Harry when the Duke of Sussex returns to the U.K. next week, amid renewed concerns inside the royal family that private conversations could be leaked to the press.
Sources familiar with the situation say the monarch, who is undergoing cancer treatment, has become increasingly cautious about personal interactions with Harry following their brief meeting in September 2025. That encounter, which lasted less than an hour, was the first time the pair had seen each other in more than 18 months and reportedly required months of negotiations between aides on both sides.
Royal commentators say the meeting only reinforced palace fears that Harry cannot be trusted to keep sensitive family matters private—particularly details surrounding the king’s health. King Charles has made clear that his treatment is a deeply personal issue, and insiders say there is concern that any discussions could quickly become public.
According to royal experts, communication between the king and his younger son remains minimal. Charles is also expected to be out of London while Harry is in the country, as he typically spends time in Scotland in January while scaling back public duties.
Harry, 41, is returning to London for the latest stage of his legal battle against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. The trial is scheduled to begin January 19 and centers on allegations of unlawful information-gathering practices. Other high-profile figures, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, are also involved in the case.
British commentators have suggested the ongoing lawsuits have become a source of embarrassment for the royal family, further straining already tense relationships. Harry has long argued that he has been unfairly targeted by the British press and the wider establishment.
Tensions reportedly escalated again after Harry spoke publicly following his September visit to London, telling The Guardian that the focus in the coming year “really has to be on my dad” amid the king’s cancer battle. Palace insiders say those comments reignited concerns that Harry would use private family interactions to advance his own narrative.
The fallout from Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare, continues to loom large. In the book and subsequent interviews, the duke defended his decision to share intimate details about royal life, insisting his conscience was clear—an explanation that did little to reassure his family.
Speculation has also surfaced that King Charles could visit Harry and his family in Montecito, California, during a potential U.S. trip later this year. Royal sources have pushed back on that idea, saying there are no plans for a private visit to Harry and Meghan Markle during any official travel.
While the king is said to want a relationship with his grandchildren, insiders stress that he will not blur the line between his role as monarch and the ongoing tensions surrounding his son. For now, the divide between father and son appears firmly in place.
