A 69-year-old Nebraska man was killed in a bizarre and heartbreaking accident at a McDonald’s drive-thru just before Christmas.
Michael Dickinson, a grandfather and skilled mechanic from Grand Island, died Tuesday morning after being pinned between his car and the restaurant’s payment window. According to police, Dickinson had opened his door to reach further out and pay when something went terribly wrong — his vehicle lurched forward, crushing him against the drive-thru wall.
Police Division Chief Dean Elliott told local outlet KSNB-TV the tragedy was “100% a freak accident,” adding, “We’re not sure if the vehicle lurched forward or what happened, but he became pinned between the door frame and the drive-thru window counter.”
A McDonald’s employee heroically leapt through the passenger side of the car in a desperate attempt to save him but couldn’t free Dickinson in time. The worker was injured in the process.
Dickinson, who had overcome the amputation of his right leg in 2021 and relearned to walk with a prosthetic, was remembered by his family as a loyal, hardworking man with a heart for helping others.
“A skilled and hardworking mechanic, Michael took pride in his work and had a gift for fixing what was broken,” his loved ones wrote. “Though his life was cut short, his love, loyalty, and kindness will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the tragedy.
