In one of the most bizarre wildlife encounters imaginable, a North Carolina driver was left stunned after a bald eagle dropped a cat straight through her windshield—shattering the glass and leaving her shaken but miraculously unhurt.
The jaw-dropping moment happened just after 8 a.m. Wednesday along US-74 in Swain County.
“You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,” the driver told a 911 operator in disbelief. “It absolutely shattered my windshield.”
“I do believe you, honestly,” the operator replied—because apparently, even they’ve heard it all in rural North Carolina.
A witness at the scene told officers it was “the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” and authorities with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the story was no tall tale.
Sadly, the cat didn’t survive the fall. The eagle reportedly flew off after the impact, leaving first responders to deal with the aftermath of a scene that looked like something out of a movie.
Locals have since taken to social media to express both shock and sympathy, with many calling it “a freak accident you’d only believe if you saw it yourself.”
Wildlife officials say bald eagles have been known to snatch small animals but rarely—if ever—drop them mid-flight over highways.
Truly a once-in-a-lifetime encounter that no one on that stretch of US-74 will forget anytime soon.
