Michelle Obama is facing major backlash online after admitting she “couldn’t have survived” the White House years without her personal glam team — and insisting she’d never wear clothes “off the rack.”
The former First Lady, 61, made the eyebrow-raising comments while promoting her new photo book The Look, which showcases her most memorable fashion moments from her eight years in Washington.
During an interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Michelle opened up about her daily prep routine, saying, “Every day, every time I was ‘up,’ I was up for the public. The days were long. Having a glam team trifecta — hair, makeup, and wardrobe — it feels like a luxury, but it was a time necessity.”
But it was her next remark that set social media ablaze. “There’s absolutely no way that I would be able to do my hair and makeup and have clothes ready that fit, because rare is the woman that can live ‘off the rack,’” she said.
That didn’t sit well with viewers. “Idk why she tries so hard to be relatable. It always sounds like a rich person complaining about being rich,” one X user fired back. Another added, “99% of women live off the rack, Michelle. Welcome to reality.”
Others accused her of sounding “ungrateful and classless,” while one commenter sniped, “She’s addicted to complaining about her incredibly privileged life.”
Michelle — dressed to the nines for the interview — went on to lament how “psychologically damaging” beauty standards can be. “The work it takes to take yourself out of your natural state… it’s financially ruining for so many of us,” she said.
This isn’t the first time the former First Lady’s comments about her lifestyle have raised eyebrows. Earlier this year, she admitted she was shocked to learn she had to pay for her own food in the White House. “You’re paying for every bit of food that you eat,” she said on The Diary of a CEO podcast, adding that even her daughters’ travel on the First Lady’s plane wasn’t free.
Between the off-the-rack remark and the pricey glam confessions, Michelle’s “relatability” campaign may have backfired — again.

Nothing different from the other First Ladies who also had a team of makeup people and hairdressers and fashion people and whatnot to make them look their absolute best as they were also representing the US, alongside their husband, the President (at the time). Trying to write it up as something different or “more than” or whatever than any other First Lady is pathetic and smarmy and intentionally done to stir the pot. And many – if not all – of the First Ladies – past and present – have worn expensive, name brand clothing. So Michelle Obama doing it is nothing new or different. People just like to squawk because they don’t like her, and mainly due to the color of her skin and/or political affiliation. Which is just hogwash, and low.
Yes this First Lady is very different then all the rest.
Is she a she or he?
She got wealthy off of Americans.
She spent more time bragging on self then any other.
She used more of American tax money on so called date nights and traveling to ad from.
Spent more tax dollars on travel back and forth from Hawaii.
Spent more tax dollars redecorating in the White House.
Spent more tax dollars then any other for her children.
Spent more tax dollars keeping a friend quiet about her.
Spent more tax dollars on trying to coverup natural look.
Spent more tax dollars on outfits that looked tasteless.
Spent more tax dollars learning how to be a lady for foreign leaders and elite.
Spent more tax dollars for eating in and out.
Now she says she is special.
