A Florida father is being called both a hero and a heartbroken parent after a terrifying confrontation that nearly ended in bloodshed. Deputies say the man was stabbed in the back of his head by his own son — then threw himself in front of police guns to keep officers from shooting the 22-year-old attacker.
Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez was arrested in Deltona, about 30 miles north of Orlando, after deputies responded to reports of a young man threatening to kill four children while armed with a large hunting knife. When officers arrived, they found Trevor’s father standing between his son and the door of the home — bleeding, shaking, and still refusing to move aside. Inside were four terrified children.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies drew their weapons after the suspect ignored repeated commands to drop the knife. That’s when the father did the unthinkable — he stepped directly into the line of fire, holding his hands up and begging police not to shoot. “He didn’t want his son to die,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood told reporters. “He had already been stabbed and he still put himself between that knife and our deputies. It’s one of the most selfless acts I’ve seen.”
Body-camera footage captured the dramatic scene as the suspect’s father pleaded for calm while his son shouted obscenities, flipped officers off, and finally threw down the blade. But as deputies approached, Nieves-Gonzalez suddenly spit on one of them. A Taser fired — and he went down hard. “He dropped immediately,” one deputy said. “We got him cuffed without anyone else getting hurt.”
Only after the suspect was subdued did the father admit he had been stabbed in the back of the head during the struggle. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his wounds and released. “He’s lucky to be alive,” said a neighbor who witnessed the chaos from across the street. “You could hear the screaming. It sounded like something out of a horror movie.”
Nieves-Gonzalez is now facing a stack of felony charges, including four counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, four counts of child abuse, aggravated battery, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer. He appeared before a judge on November 3, was assigned a public defender, and is due back in court December 4. He has not yet entered a plea.
Neighbors say the family had lived in the area for years and that the father was a quiet man devoted to his children. “He’s one of those dads who’d fix your car for free,” a resident told WKMG News 6. “He’d do anything for those kids — and you saw it. He literally put his body on the line.”
Sheriff Chitwood said the father’s actions likely prevented a tragedy. “He saved four children — and he saved his son from being killed by police,” Chitwood said. “That’s not something most of us could do. That’s love at its purest and most painful.”
Trevor Nieves-Gonzalez remains in custody at the Volusia County Jail. The four children are safe and receiving care from family members.
