One killed, two in custody, terrified shoppers describe hiding as police swarmed the building.

A routine afternoon of shopping turned into a nightmare Tuesday when gunfire erupted inside Augusta Mall in Georgia, leaving one person dead and sparking mass panic among employees and shoppers.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deadly incident just after 1:30 p.m. local time, saying two suspects were taken into custody. Deputies swept through the sprawling complex store by store, searching for additional victims or anyone still in hiding.

“This process will take a while,” the sheriff’s office warned in a Facebook update. “We are still on scene dealing with multiple issues at this time… Deputies are having to clear store by store to look for anybody that is still inside hiding and or possibly having a medical emergency.”

As the chaos unfolded, terrified customers huddled in dressing rooms, storage areas, and even under display racks. One woman told WRDW she grabbed her teenage daughter and ran into a bathroom, locking the door until police escorted them out.

“People were screaming and crying. We didn’t know if we’d make it out alive,” she said.

Another shopper described hearing “four or five loud bangs” near Dillard’s before the mall went into lockdown. “The next thing I knew, people were running past me and yelling, ‘Shooter, shooter!’”

This is the third time in less than two years the Augusta Mall has been rocked by gun violence. In April 2024, a shooting inside Dillard’s injured one person. Just two months later, another man was wounded during a separate incident.

Brookfield Properties, which manages the mall, admitted Tuesday’s shooting appeared to stem from a dispute among a small group of people but stressed the mall would remain closed for the rest of the day. “The safety of our shoppers and employees is our top priority,” a spokesperson told Newsweek.

Multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency crews rushed to the scene. Local TV cameras captured images of at least three stretchers being wheeled inside as ambulances waited outside the entrances.

By late afternoon, the sheriff’s office confirmed one fatality. Authorities are still piecing together how the confrontation escalated so quickly in such a crowded public space.

The repeated gun violence at Augusta Mall has left residents shaken. “This place used to feel safe, but now every time I bring my kids here, I wonder if we’re putting ourselves at risk,” said one father who rushed to the mall after hearing his daughter was trapped inside.

Officials are expected to release more details about the suspects, the victim, and whether further arrests are likely. Meanwhile, locals are left rattled by yet another shooting at what was once a family-friendly shopping hub.
