Limp Bizkit is mourning the loss of one of their founding members. Sam Rivers, the band’s longtime bassist, has died at the age of 48, the group confirmed in a heartbreaking post shared to Instagram on Saturday.
In their statement, the nu-metal legends called Rivers “the heartbeat” of the band, adding, “He wasn’t just a bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.” They went on to describe him as “a once-in-a-lifetime person and a legend among legends,” ending with the message: “Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”
Rivers helped shape Limp Bizkit’s iconic sound alongside frontman Fred Durst and drummer John Otto — both of whom he met decades ago while growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. In a now-famous story, Rivers met Durst while working at a Chick-fil-A in the early ’90s. The pair, along with Otto, formed Limp Bizkit before adding guitarist Wes Borland and DJ Lethal in 1996.
The group exploded onto the late-’90s rock scene with hit albums like Significant Other (1999) and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), cementing their place in pop culture history.
Rivers briefly stepped away from the band in 2015 after revealing he had developed liver disease caused by heavy drinking. Following a successful liver transplant, he made a triumphant return in 2020 — rejoining the group for their later tours and projects.
Fans and fellow musicians have begun flooding social media with tributes to the late bassist, remembering his unmatched stage presence and powerful groove.
Rivers was 48.
