Seven people were killed Monday afternoon after a semi-trailer plowed into a passenger van on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, Georgia — sparking a fiery chain-reaction crash that left the highway closed for hours and emergency crews shaken by the scene.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 4:11 p.m. near mile marker 135 when a tractor-trailer, reportedly “following too closely,” rammed into the back of a Dodge van in northbound traffic. The impact caused the van to burst into flames before setting off a domino effect that involved four additional vehicles.
“Everything just exploded in front of me,” said one driver who witnessed the crash but asked not to be named. “You could feel the heat from the fire even from the other side of the road. It was like a nightmare.”
All seven people inside the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released as investigators work to contact next of kin.
The Georgia State Patrol confirmed that its Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation to determine what caused the deadly sequence of events. A spokesperson for the agency told Atlanta News First that preliminary findings indicate “speed and following distance will both be key factors” in the probe.
Footage from the aftermath showed mangled metal and blackened debris scattered across the interstate. The semi’s cab was nearly melted from the flames, and multiple vehicles sat crumpled along the shoulder. Fire crews battled the blaze for more than 30 minutes as traffic backed up for miles.
Interstate 85’s northbound lanes were shut down for over five hours while officials cleared wreckage and began documenting evidence. Drivers were rerouted through nearby exits as investigators examined the charred remains of the vehicles late into the evening.
Local resident Carla Jenkins, who lives just a mile from the crash site, said the sound was “like an explosion.” “We’ve had accidents here before, but nothing like this,” she told WSB-TV. “It’s heartbreaking — seven lives gone in seconds.”
The tragedy comes amid a troubling rise in fatal highway crashes across Georgia. According to the state’s Department of Transportation, deadly collisions involving large trucks are up nearly 15 percent in 2025 compared to last year.
In a similar case earlier this year, a mother and her four children were killed in southern Georgia when their SUV caught fire after colliding with another vehicle on I-95. That crash prompted renewed calls for stricter trucking safety measures — a conversation that will likely intensify following Monday’s devastation.
“This is a horrific loss of life,” said Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum. “We’re praying for the families tonight, and we’ll be doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened here.”
The investigation remains ongoing, with state officials expected to release the victims’ names later this week.
