Tragedy struck just north of New York City Wednesday evening when a van crossed the median on the Taconic State Parkway and slammed into an oncoming car—leaving four people dead and another fighting for their life.

According to New York State Police, the van was traveling southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered across the center median and entered the northbound lanes in Westchester County. It collided head-on with a car, resulting in a violent crash that overturned the van, which quickly erupted in flames.

Three passengers in the van died at the scene. The driver of the car was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive. The van’s driver was critically injured and remains hospitalized.

The horrific crash forced authorities to close off the northbound lanes of the Taconic Parkway for several hours as investigators worked to determine what caused the deadly crossover. As of now, no official explanation has been given.

The Taconic, known for its narrow lanes and tight curves, has a long and troubled history of serious accidents. This latest crash adds to a grim list of fatalities on one of New York’s most infamous highways.
