Cindy McCain Suffers Stroke

Cindy McCain, the widow of late Senator John McCain and current head of the United Nations World Food Program, suffered a mild stroke earlier this week in Rome. Officials say the 71-year-old humanitarian is recovering well and is expected to make a full recovery.

In a statement released Thursday, the U.N. agency confirmed McCain will return home to Arizona to rest before resuming her duties in about a month. “I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” McCain said. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care.”

McCain has been a major force in global humanitarian work since being appointed Executive Director of the World Food Program in March 2023. Before that, she served as U.S. ambassador to U.N. food and agriculture agencies under President Joe Biden.

Though she was once a prominent Republican figure, McCain made headlines in 2020 when she publicly endorsed Biden’s presidential bid — a move that distanced her from then-President Donald Trump, who had long feuded with her late husband. “It was about decency and leadership,” McCain told NBC’s Today at the time, explaining her endorsement.

Under her leadership, the World Food Program has expanded its reach amid wars, droughts, and natural disasters. The organization says it is helping nearly 150 million people across 87 countries cope with conflict and hunger fueled by climate change.

McCain recently returned from the Gaza Strip, where she described seeing widespread hunger firsthand. “I personally met mothers and children who were starving,” she said after her visit. “It is real and it is happening now.”

Her plea for greater humanitarian access came just as international food agencies warned that famine was gripping parts of Gaza and could spread without immediate aid.

A longtime advocate for children and families, McCain has served on the board of Operation Smile, a nonprofit that provides surgeries for children with facial deformities in developing countries. Her work has taken her to India, Morocco, and Vietnam.

“She brings compassion and conviction to every role she takes on,” former World Food Program Director David Beasley said in 2023, praising her appointment as his successor. Beasley himself guided the agency through the pandemic and earned the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its global hunger prevention work.

Until McCain returns, her deputy Carl Skau will manage day-to-day operations at the Rome headquarters. In Thursday’s statement, McCain expressed confidence in her team: “I have full confidence in our leadership to stay laser-focused on delivering urgently needed food assistance.”

She added, “The fight against hunger has never been more critical, and I look forward to being back in the field soon — alongside our teams — pushing back against famine and supporting communities in need.”

McCain’s office says she will remain in Arizona for several weeks before reassuming her global duties, a plan that mirrors the perseverance and resolve long associated with the McCain name.
