A South Carolina couple’s Halloween spirit has officially set the internet ablaze—literally.
Sam Lee and Amanda Riggins Peden’s Fountain Inn home looks like it’s burning to the ground thanks to an ultra-realistic setup that floods every window with flickering orange “flames” and pumps thick smoke from under the porch. The illusion is so convincing that it’s caused neighbors to repeatedly dial 911—sometimes three or four times in one night.

The couple, who’ve been creating over-the-top Halloween scenes for five years, say they warned their neighbors that the blaze is fake. “Our house will be on fire (not real fire) every night from 8-10 PM until Halloween,” Peden wrote on Facebook. “Please do not call the fire department again!”
Even so, local firefighters can’t ignore the alarms. Fountain Inn Fire Chief Russell Alexander told Today.com his department received about 30 calls the first year the fiery display appeared. “It’s bad practice to not send a truck,” he said. “If we get a call, we’re sending one—no matter what.”
Online, reactions are just as heated. One TikTok video of the “burning” home has racked up nearly 25 million views, splitting users between those who say it “should be illegal” and others calling it “the coolest Halloween house ever.”
“Very cool—but looks way too real! I would’ve called, too,” one commenter admitted. Another warned, “What if there’s a real fire someday and nobody calls because they think it’s just decorations?”
Lee, who happens to be the town’s former mayor, says the criticism won’t stop them. “Most people appreciate it, but there’s always that one percent who aren’t happy with anything,” he said.
This isn’t the first time the pair’s creativity has drawn attention. In past years, their home has been transformed into a crash site—with a broken airplane and skeleton passengers—and a wrecked car scene featuring a 12-foot skeleton trapped inside.
“It’s just gotten crazier every year,” Lee laughed.
