In a rare move, former President Bill Clinton has stepped up to defend George W. Bush’s characteristic silence on the 2024 presidential election.

For a man who led the GOP through two terms and countless campaigns, Bush has chosen to stay out of the fray this cycle, a decision Clinton understands well.

“Look, he’s given his life to the Republican Party,” Clinton explained in a CNN interview. “He doesn’t want to alienate the party that’s been central to his career.”

Bush, or “Dubya” as he’s known, has deliberately steered clear of presidential endorsements since backing John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012. In fact, his public political focus has shifted away from the national scene.

Earlier this year, Bush quietly held a fundraiser for Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick, supporting GOP efforts down the ballot instead of wading into high-stakes presidential battles.

And he’s been consistent. “He’s spoken up, I think, more than he’s gotten credit for,” Clinton noted, referencing Bush’s passionate, albeit restrained, advocacy for issues like immigration reform. “He takes every opportunity that I’ve seen to talk about how important immigration is and how we can’t survive without it.”

Yet perhaps the most surprising name in Bush’s circle of approval? Rep. Colin Allred, a Texas Democrat running for Senate who actually represents Bush’s home district. Clinton revealed that Bush has openly admired Allred, even telling him so personally. “He’ll tell anybody that, that he’s a good guy,” Clinton remarked.

It’s clear Bush is walking a careful line, preserving ties to the GOP without embroiling himself in today’s bitter political divisions. “He knows, as I do, that life out of politics is different,” Clinton continued. “There’s no competition, no consequence. And I think he believes that since he was a proud Republican all those years, it’s enough for him to make clear what he believes without giving up the party he’s been with all his life.”

But while Bush avoids discussing the 2024 presidential race, his opinion on one former president is well known. In a memorable incident during Trump’s 2017 inauguration, Bush watched as the new president delivered his dark vision of “American carnage.”

Leaning over to none other than Hillary Clinton, Bush made his blunt assessment of Trump’s speech: “That was some weird sh-t.”
