Former NBA star Jason Collins is facing a new and difficult battle after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. The league confirmed that the 46-year-old is undergoing treatment, asking fans to keep him in their thoughts.

Collins’ basketball journey began and ended with the Brooklyn Nets, where he officially retired in 2014. But it was in 2013 that he made history beyond the court, becoming the first active athlete from one of the four major North American team sports to come out as gay. “If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand,” Collins said at the time.

Earlier this summer, Collins married his longtime partner, Brunson Green, marking a new chapter in his personal life. Now, his family is asking for privacy as he undergoes treatment, while also welcoming messages of support from fans.

The Nets shared a heartfelt message on social media, writing, “Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family.”
