FBI admits key “subject” in custody has been released — as the gunman behind the political killing of Charlie Kirk remains at large.
Just hours after conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk was gunned down at a Utah college campus, the FBI confirmed that the person briefly taken into custody has been released — sparking outrage, confusion, and fears of further violence.
The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was shot in the neck during a midday speaking event at Utah Valley University in Orem. The attack, described by Governor Spencer Cox as a “political assassination,” unfolded in front of 3,000 stunned attendees and sent shockwaves across the country.
In a rapidly shifting investigation, FBI Director Kash Patel initially announced that a “subject” had been taken into custody and praised law enforcement for swift action. But just 90 minutes later, Patel posted a stunning reversal.
“The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement,” Patel wrote on X. “Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”
No other suspects have been publicly identified.
Witnesses say the single fatal shot was fired from the Losee Center, a campus building roughly 200 yards from Kirk’s speaking platform. Kirk had just begun discussing gender issues under a large white tent when the bullet struck.
Video footage captured the exact moment of impact: Kirk’s body jolted and blood gushed from his neck as the microphone dropped. Chaos followed, with hundreds of students screaming and diving for cover.
“It was surreal. I saw him go limp,” Deseret News reporter Emma Pitts told CNN. “So much blood came out of his neck immediately. It was horrifying.”
University spokeswoman Ellen Treanor confirmed only one shot was fired. No other injuries were reported.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox did not mince words during an evening press conference.
“To whoever did this, we will find you, we will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law,” he declared. “And in Utah, that includes the death penalty.”
Despite earlier reports of a “person of interest” in custody, Cox admitted the manhunt remains active. The shifting narrative has sparked criticism of the investigation’s coordination.
UVU Police Chief Jeff Long said six officers were assigned to Kirk’s Turning Point event, and the conservative influencer had his own security detail. Still, they couldn’t stop the sniper shot that ended Kirk’s life.
“You try to get your bases covered, and unfortunately, today, we didn’t,” Long admitted. “Because of that, we have this tragic incident.”
Armed agents and tactical vehicles swarmed the campus immediately after the attack, but the shooter managed to vanish.
Charlie Kirk was more than a political provocateur — he was a rising star in the MAGA movement. A close ally of President Donald Trump, Kirk had spoken at rallies, conventions, and the controversial post-inauguration “America First” rally in 2025.
Born in Illinois, Kirk founded Turning Point USA at just 18 and built it into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in America. He frequently sparred with leftist activists and appeared regularly on right-wing media platforms.
He is survived by his wife, Erika Kirk, and their two young children.
“Charlie was a warrior for truth, a defender of American values, and a great friend,” President Trump posted in a statement. “His voice was powerful. His loss is devastating.”
The apparent misstep in releasing a key subject has triggered mounting questions over how the shooter escaped and whether authorities have botched a politically sensitive case.
With no suspect in custody, no public ID, and no confirmed motive beyond the political context of the attack, Americans across the political spectrum are demanding answers.
