Bindi Irwin, 27, faced a terrifying health scare just as she prepared to honor her late father, Steve Irwin, on the 19th anniversary of his tragic death.
The wildlife conservationist traveled from Australia to Las Vegas with her mom, Terri, to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala — but instead of walking the red carpet, she was rushed to the hospital when her appendix suddenly ruptured.
Her younger brother, Robert, 21, revealed that Bindi had planned to “tough it out” and still make an appearance at the event. But doctors had other plans.
“The surgeon told her, ‘Your appendix is going. It’s got to come out,’” Robert shared.
While the emergency surgery went smoothly, the ordeal was a heavy blow for the close-knit Irwin family as they approached September 4 — the date marking 19 years since Steve Irwin’s shocking stingray accident in 2006.
Robert stepped up to host the gala in his sister’s absence while Terri stayed by Bindi’s side at the hospital.
“She came to Las Vegas ready to put on a brave face,” Robert said. “But surgery was definitely not something we were prepared for.”
Bindi’s appendix rupture wasn’t her first major health challenge. In March 2023, she revealed she’d been diagnosed with endometriosis after “13 years of fighting for answers.”
“For 10 years I struggled with insurmountable fatigue, pain, and nausea,” she shared on Instagram. “Trying to hide the pain and stay positive was exhausting.”
Doctors discovered 37 lesions and a cyst during her first surgery — a turning point for Bindi, who said the procedure changed her life.
During her emergency appendix removal in May, doctors made another unexpected find: 14 more lesions were removed, along with a large hernia repair from childbirth four years ago.
In a heartfelt Instagram update, Bindi reassured fans:
“Surgery was a success. My appendix was removed, along with another 14 lesions… Thankfully, I am on the road to recovery.”
She also praised Robert for “making Dad proud” by hosting the gala and raising crucial funds for Wildlife Warriors, the organization founded in Steve Irwin’s honor.
