Italian Olympic swimming stars Benedetta Pilato and Chiara Tarantino have been caught up in a shocking shoplifting scandal in Singapore, sparking international headlines and furious backlash in Italy.

Authorities at Changi Airport stopped the two athletes earlier this week after allegedly finding stolen merchandise inside Pilato’s suitcase. Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Tarantino placed the items there before security flagged the bag.

The timing makes the incident even more explosive. Pilato, just 20 years old, had earned a bronze medal in the 50-meter breaststroke at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships weeks earlier, but the confrontation happened as the two returned from a vacation in Bali.

The Italian embassy rushed to intervene and secured their release within hours. No formal charges were filed, but the embarrassment is massive. The Italian Swimming Federation issued a terse statement condemning the situation and promising to “carefully evaluate the matter.”

Pilato broke her silence on Instagram, expressing both shock and frustration: “On days that should have been for rest and mental relaxation, I went through, far from home, particularly difficult moments, which fortunately turned out to be independent of my will.”

She stressed her cooperation with Singapore authorities: “I collaborated with local authorities from the very beginning, with the full support of the Italian embassy. Fortunately, the incident ended within a few hours, without any implications, thanks to my maximum transparency.”

Pilato, one of Italy’s brightest swimming talents with five world championship medals and a gold in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2022 worlds, also defended her reputation: “I never intended to commit inappropriate gestures, and those who know me know how much I care about sport values, fairness, and personal honesty. From this experience, I’ve learned great lessons about prudence, individual responsibility, and the value of the people around me.”

Tarantino, 22, who won a bronze at the 2021 European Championships, has remained silent. Behind the scenes, insiders say the federation may launch an internal investigation, and public opinion in Italy is sharply divided — some defend Pilato as a victim, while others call the incident a national disgrace.
