A curious moment from the high-profile Trump-Putin summit in Alaska has sparked online speculation after cameras caught Russian president Vladimir Putin’s leg twitching repeatedly as he stood next to Donald Trump.
The unusual footage was taken at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Base in Anchorage, where the two leaders spoke briefly with the help of a translator following their joint press conference. While the pair kept things diplomatic, Putin’s restless knee movements became the unexpected headline.
Video clips shared on social media show Putin’s knee dipping and his left toe and heel lifting in turn as he stood beside the 6-foot-3 former president. The contrast in stature between Trump and the 5-foot-7 Russian leader was already striking, but eagle-eyed viewers claimed Putin appeared to be wearing platform shoes—and possibly even some kind of light exoskeleton under his trousers—to minimize the height gap.

Ukrainian commentators seized on the footage, mocking Putin’s fidgeting and raising questions about his health. “Attention—Putin’s legs. What is wrong with them?” one outlet asked. Another quipped, “Maybe his shoes are too tight.” Others speculated about a “Napoleon complex” fueling the Russian leader’s choice of footwear.
After his appearance with Trump, Putin was later seen bending his knee to lay flowers at the Fort Richardson Memorial Cemetery, honoring Soviet pilots who died in Alaska during World War II training missions. From there, he boarded his heavily guarded presidential plane—escorted by American F-35 fighter jets—and flew to Russia’s far eastern region of Chukotka for additional meetings.
Meanwhile, Trump has been on the phone with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as NATO and European allies, updating them on the two-and-a-half-hour summit. Zelensky has since announced plans to travel to Washington on Monday for further talks.
Whether Putin’s twitch was a simple quirk, a health issue, or just the side effect of tight shoes, it quickly overshadowed the otherwise serious business of the Alaska summit—and gave critics fresh material to dissect.
