A sunny afternoon over Brazil’s stunning Guanabara Bay turned to horror on August 8 when a tandem paraglider carrying a young girl’s parents plunged into a steep, wooded hillside — killing them instantly and leaving their three-year-old daughter without a mother or father.

The victims have been identified as 29-year-old paragliding and scuba instructor Luan Calor Cannelas Gomes da Silva and his former partner Vanessa do Nascimento Alves. Though separated, the pair remained close friends and shared custody of their daughter. According to investigators, Luan had invited Vanessa to join him for the flight — one they had taken before — as a gesture of goodwill.

Just five days before the crash, Luan had posted smiling photos of himself soaring from the very same launch ramp at Niteroi City Park with other passengers. Friends say he was known for his skill and caution.

“He never flew in bad weather. He always checked the wind. This is a shock to all of us,” said fellow pilot and friend Marcelo Rodrigues.

But on that Saturday, something went horribly wrong. At 12:57 p.m., the Rio de Janeiro State Military Fire Department received an urgent call: a paraglider had gone down.

Video taken after the crash shows firefighters navigating the treacherous hillside as a helicopter hovered overhead. An ambulance waited below at Charitas Beach, but there was no miracle.

“Both were already without signs of life when we reached them,” a rescue official confirmed. The bodies were transported to the Forensic Medical Institute for examination.

The tragedy has prompted immediate action from local authorities. The Niteroi Public Order Secretariat has suspended all paragliding launches from the city’s ramps, closed roads leading to the site, and erected signs warning tourists to hire only accredited pilots.

Oversight of the sport in Brazil is shared by the National Civil Aviation Agency and the Air Force. Investigators are now examining weather conditions, equipment, and possible human error.

Friends of the family say the couple’s daughter is now staying with relatives. “She’s too young to understand what happened,” said one family friend, her voice breaking. “One day she’ll know her parents loved her — and each other — enough to still spend time together.”

Niteroi City Park, perched high above the Atlantic with sweeping views of Rio, is a favorite spot for thrill-seekers from around the world. For one little girl, however, it will forever be the place where her parents’ final adventure ended.
