Neal McDonough, best known for playing Malcolm Beck in Yellowstone, says his career took a nosedive after he made a personal — and controversial — decision: he won’t kiss anyone on screen.
Speaking on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, McDonough revealed that his refusal to do romantic scenes led to a harsh backlash from Hollywood.
“For two years, I couldn’t get a job,” he said. “I lost everything — not just my house or stuff — but my cool, my confidence, my identity. I was an actor, a really good one, and then suddenly I wasn’t. That sent me into a real tailspin.” He admitted that during that time, he also struggled with alcohol and developed “a big drinking problem.”
McDonough, a devout Catholic, has had a long career in film and TV, appearing in Band of Brothers, Boomtown, Minority Report, and Flags of Our Fathers. But everything changed after he married model Ruvé Robertson in 2003. From that point on, he insisted on a clause in his contracts: no kissing scenes.
“It wasn’t even my wife’s request,” McDonough explained. “It was me. I just didn’t feel right about it. But once Hollywood realized I wouldn’t do romantic scenes, they just stopped calling. I was kicked off shows, written out of scripts. They didn’t want to deal with it.”
In fact, back in 2010, McDonough was famously fired just three days into filming ABC’s Scoundrels because he refused to do intimate scenes with his female co-star. He was swiftly replaced.
Despite the setback, McDonough has managed to carve out a new path in the industry. He’s found a home in faith-based productions and recently starred in The Last Rodeo, a drama from Angel Studios about a bull rider fighting to save his son. The film is currently playing in theaters.
McDonough may have lost roles for sticking to his convictions, but he’s made it clear that compromising his values was never an option.
