In a horrifying act that has left a New York community stunned, a one-year-old baby girl was thrown down a garbage chute by her own uncle Monday afternoon—yet somehow survived with only minor injuries, according to law enforcement sources.
The incident unfolded at a public housing complex on Steuben Street in Staten Island, just after 3 p.m. Police were called to the building following reports of an “emotionally disturbed person.” What they discovered was the stuff of nightmares.
Inside the building, NYPD officers found the child—barely a year old—wedged in a refuse collection area three floors below. She had been dropped down a narrow garbage chute from the third floor, allegedly by her 39-year-old uncle, whose name has not yet been released.
Miraculously, the child suffered only a scrape on her torso. She was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center, where she remains in stable condition under medical observation.
“This could’ve been a homicide. That baby should be dead,” one NYPD officer at the scene told reporters. “It’s a miracle she landed the way she did. These chutes are metal, narrow, and dangerous.”
Sources say the suspect has a documented history of mental illness and was known to family members as increasingly unstable in recent weeks. “He hasn’t been right for months,” a neighbor who asked not to be identified told The Post. “But nobody thought he’d do something like this. A baby? His own niece?”
The child’s mother, who was reportedly at work at the time, arrived at the scene in tears and was seen being comforted by officers.
As of Monday evening, the uncle remains in police custody. No charges have yet been filed, but sources say child endangerment and attempted murder are on the table.
President Trump, in a statement issued through the White House, called the incident “deeply disturbing and unacceptable.” He added, “The safety of our children is non-negotiable. I’ve directed the DOJ to monitor the investigation closely and ensure justice is served.”
This latest episode adds to growing public concern about crime and untreated mental illness in New York City, as Trump continues to push his administration’s crackdown on urban violence and reinstatement of federal mental health oversight programs.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the building and speaking to witnesses.
