A deadly hit-and-run has rocked a quiet Brooklyn neighborhood after a BMW driver plowed into two men and fled the scene like a ghost in the night.
It happened just before dawn Friday morning, around 4:20 a.m., when the city was still mostly asleep. The two victims—an 80-year-old and a 59-year-old—were crossing Third Avenue at 52nd Street in the Sunset Park area when a dark-colored BMW came barreling down the street and struck them without warning.
“It was chaos,” said one resident who woke to the sounds of sirens and police tape being strung across the street. “They didn’t stand a chance.”
Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but there was nothing they could do. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, their bodies left crumpled on the pavement as investigators worked under the glow of streetlamps.
Police say the driver didn’t stop for a second.
“The vehicle did not slow down or attempt to render aid,” a senior NYPD official told reporters. “This was a cold, calculated escape.”
What’s even more chilling? Authorities believe the victims didn’t even know each other. They were just two New Yorkers, out early—perhaps heading to work or getting a jump on the day—cut down in a split second.
The NYPD is now scouring surveillance footage and urging anyone with information to come forward.
“This driver left two innocent men dead in the street,” said a detective on the case. “We will not rest until we find who’s responsible.”
No arrests had been made by Friday afternoon. The killer behind the wheel is still out there.
Sunset Park residents say they’re used to speeding cars—but this? This feels different.
“It’s scary,” said one local. “You’re not even safe crossing the street anymore.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
