The official cause of death for music legend Brian Wilson has been revealed, shedding light on the health struggles that ultimately led to his passing.
According to his death certificate, Wilson died from respiratory arrest — a condition in which the lungs stop working even though the heart may still be beating. The American CPR Care Association describes respiratory arrest as a life-threatening event that prevents oxygen from reaching the body.
The document also lists sepsis and cystitis — both infection-related complications — as contributing factors. Wilson had been battling a number of chronic health issues in recent years, including a neurodegenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure, and chronic kidney disease.
Wilson, 82, had been in declining health, and his family announced in 2023 that he was suffering from dementia. His death, while heartbreaking to fans around the world, appears to have been from natural causes.
Earlier this month, his family shared news of his passing, saying they were “heartbroken” and asked for privacy during what they described as a “difficult time.”
Brian Wilson was a founding member of the Beach Boys, the iconic group that helped define the sound of the 1960s. He was widely regarded as the creative force behind many of their biggest hits, known for his visionary songwriting and production.
Tragedy had already struck Wilson’s life when his longtime wife, Melinda, passed away in 2024. In the wake of her death, Wilson’s family petitioned for a conservatorship to help manage his affairs as his health worsened.
The music world mourns the loss of a true icon, whose influence shaped generations of artists and fans alike.
